Excepted from Friday The 13th: Bloodbath #2, Dec 2005. Written by Brian Pulido, Penciled & Inked by Mike Wolfer, Colored by Andrew Dalhouse, Published by Avatar Comics.

Commentary:
It’s no surprise licensed comic books will many times take on the form of the most recent franchise film entry. Back in the post-Freddy Vs Jason days when Avatar got their hands on Friday the 13th from New Line, they must’ve looked at the movie’s for better or worse distillation of series concepts (and excess humor) as an excuse to pump out one-note stories. Witness, almost every death scene would be committed upon naked fornicators. Take these 3 sequential pages, indicative of all the other pages not shown…

…annnnd check out the “b” plot kicking in – an evil organization or corporation or whatever intent on exploiting Jason and/or Crystal Lake or something. Too often human villains are employed in the comics because the storytellers have no clue how to make Jason Voorhees compelling. They see him as a silent, brainless cipher to facilitate the red money shot and that cynical attitude leaks out onto the pages of Avatar’s mostly throwaway collector’s fodder. Okay, rant over. I rarely criticize because it’s a waste of time, but the above just leaked out of my brain and into the keyboard. Uh, what I mean is look at them pretty pictures. Blood! Lebsians!

Commentary:
For the two issues of this sombre little tale beautifully written by Weapon X’s Jason Aaron in what is best described as “What if Jason Was The Iron Giant”, Jason storms across the country on an epic mindless rampage facing soldiers, hicks, and somewhat of a sidekick in an afflicted young boy. Except the rampage is not so mindless after all – as we learn in the final two pages, Jason had a specific direction, destination and – touchingly – motivation in mind…

Yeah wiseguys, don’t even try popping out that classic zinger about getting mixed up between Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, I’m way ahead of you. Todd Farmer, the very manly screenwriter of Jason X is an old supporter of Friday The 13th: The Website, having defined what it is to be both the ultimate fan and professional of the Friday world. And outside of it, he’s long paid his dues as a writer and rocked up with supreme genre firepower like My Bloody Valentine 3D. Being the straight up guy he is, he recently explained in-depth the process of pitching and prepping Halloween 3D, of which he and project partner Patrick Lussier seem no longer part of.

So how did it all go from this…

Sept 12, Conference call with Malek, Bob and Matt to discuss Halloween 3D.

This call was a production meeting. There were no deals and only a rough pitch. The bulk of the call was…can it be done in the time we’ve got? We said yes. But no mistakes. No BS. No overdevelopment. No second guesses. We told them we’d have them a detailed outline in two days. An outline detailed enough to prep from. We told them we could do it if we can have our crew. No lowballing. We need the crew that can do the job right the first time. We told them that we’d give them a script that was ready to shoot. The excitement was infectious. We were asked to get them a treatment and we’d start prepping on that. The call ended with confidence high.

…to this?

We did our job! And we did it well! We were accountable. Of course, those we were dealing with would be just as accountable. It was hard enough thinking about the fact that we would not be doing the movie now. We’d just killed ourselves to get a script done and this was adult swim. We delivered a great script. Last thing I wanted to do was think about all the ways sinister dark forces were lying in wait to destroy us. I refused.

It would all work out. Things were going to get better.

Sept 28th, Patrick and I get a call from the WGA. I do not understand nor do I want to understand all the details. The gist is this. Patrick and I would be pawns in a game being played by large powerful entities sitting in seats way up high in the sky.

The answer, my friends, is both deranged and compelling. Read Todd’s full journal entry

Having run Friday The 13th: The Website for 2 and a half years now, the start of the new year is the perfect time to take stock of how far we’ve come and what’s on tap for 2010. When I purchased the site in mid-2007 my gut instinct was purely to preserve the legendary home of all-things Jason that Blake & Brenna built up over the years. But I knew I’d need more than placeholder plans to nab the joint, because the way I hear it those cats were certainly offered more moolah than I was willing to pony up, so I drew up a 10 Year plan. Yeah, talk is cheap.

The first phase was to revitalize the site, so I went into action with near-daily updates while my personal style (assigning roman numerals to the New Line films? You bastard!) clashed with memories of the past. The second phase was to bring some form of discussion back to the site while holding true to my verbal agreement not to restart the forum. Hence the Blog debuting in Feb of 08. It’s been a tag team of authors joining in ever since, eventually whittling down to just me and Jasonsfury, whose knowledge and connections within the Friday fanworld run deep. Thanks bro, you’ve carried the torch in spectacular fashion while I attend to phase three. Which is…

Main Site & Chat
Yes, I hear your groans that the 500 pages of the old site aren’t up-to-date. I’m only one man, man. So I never even bothered trying. HTML is slow and excrutiating to stay on the ball with in the age of WYSIWYG. Instead, my plan was and is to redistribute all the content into new clearly defined areas powered by modern tech – such as all the images and multimedia slowly but surely heading over to the Coppermine-powered Friday The 13th Gallery. And when I’m done, I’ll still keep the old site online as an archive to honor the fantastic work B&B achieved. I went ahead and gave the site a new frontend anyway, with a return of our old favorite – the much abused but strangely endearing Chatbox.

…Go check it out now!

Fridaypedia
All information from the site regarding the Movies, References, Locations, Timeline, etc. is moving to a massive new encyclopedia format that will put everything at your fingertips and add/edit your own content to some degree. That’s right, no more 50 emails a week pestering me about nitpicky bloopers to post, YOU are all gonna be joining me in running this massive place! Time to cut out the middleman (me) and get unprecedented access to the premiere Friday The 13th website. Coming sooner than you’d expect.

Message Board
As announced in SciFiNow Magazine last year and blogged about here, the site will finaly be getting a forum back. As I’ve stated before, it won’t be anything like the old one, so throw your preconceptions about Friday forums, and even forums in general, out the door. Blake and Brenna have given their blessing, which was the key ingredient. So thank them heartily. The board is quite complex to pull off so it will take some time to set up, and is being worked on as we speak so while it won’t be here say, this month, as soon as I have something concrete I’ll let you all know.

By Shane Zinda

Proof for the Preservation of Continuity

I, personally, found in it all I needed to classify it as a Sequel. I guess it depends on how you define Sequel. To me, in Friday the 13Th and Franchises like it, a Sequel is defined as a new entry into the series that does not definitively break continuity with that which came before.. With how Friday the 13Th and Jason work, and how continuity is already left largely in the eye of the beholder from the ending of the Part 1 onward, I think that it is actually incredibly easy for the fans of the Franchise to find a way to see it as a Sequel. I don’t demand that people agree with me, I prefer everyone decide for themselves. I just want to give evidence to this logical proof. It’s like the Bond movies, in a way. If we take into consideration the point of view that every new actor is a new 007, then there are many Bonds and not one. As such, Bond is an alias and not just one person. And, from that, we can deduce that the 007 series is one long running Franchise; and not a reboot with the new Casino Royal. With The New Friday; as long as continuity is not definitively broken, it can be considered a Sequel. Criticize my proof if you feel compelled to. I find that when people criticize me, it makes me think more. The more I think, the better defined my proofs become. So, without further adieu, my Proof of the Preservation of Continuity.

Flash Back Date

The New Friday starts out in 1980. This sets this flashback as a retelling of the end of Part 1. The best I can tell, this is done from Jason’s perspective. Though, that is debatable and in and of itself not the point of this logical proof. In elaborating on this, there is only one thing in the entire scene that might make it not jive 100% with the original. Now, I realize at first glance the order of events and dialogue are not the same. It’s not like the beginning of Part 2 where they play the end of Part 1 almost verbatim. It is a new perspective, possibly Jason’s, of the same events. If we look at the comic book Pamela’s Tale Volumes 1 and 2; they are a combination of retelling the events of Part 1 as well as shedding more light into the past that foreshadowed them.

The reason I bring this up is because it too deviates from a word by word reiteration of the same events. Rather, it paraphrases some parts. It is an example of how multiple sources of media can deliver multiple perspectives of the same event. One could think of Part1’s ending from Alice’s point of view in Part 1, Pamela’s in Pamela’s Tale, and Jason’s in the New Friday. If you were to get three people to describe to you the same event; it is likely that the descriptions will vary based on what each person found important to themselves. Thus, the retelling itself is up to interpretation.

As a side note, I guess the reason I feel The New Friday’s Prologue is from Jason’s point of view is because it is set away from the rest of the film. In doing so, it seems to belong to him. Almost as a memory. He feels that, even beheaded, she is talking specifically to him. And, it is often unclear what is happening. It does not show if Jason rose from the depths of the lake after or watched from the sidelines still alive. (In the theatrical release.) It shows us just enough to give everyone what they need to know to understand the character and leaves everything else to interpretation. I just have a feeling, with how it looked, was paced, was set apart, and was personal directly to him; that it was his memory of the event and what he found important and took away from it. The only thing, to me, is the locket. One possible explanation is that, as a memory, he might be associating it with her in the memory even though it wasn’t on her person at the time of her death. Another is that it was, and we just didn’t see it in Part 1. Maybe it was under the Blue Sweater. Or, maybe this is just a hole in my theory. I never said it was perfect. And, if you pick one of the other two, the theory still stands so far.

The Present & The Past

The next scenes take place Friday the 13Th, the Present. Which, with the release date, is 02/13/2009. Then the rest of the movie six weeks from that point. It very clearly says present; not 1981 1982, or anything like that. So, to me, this says that it is not a film that fits in between Parts 2 and 3 like some of us thought it might be before it was released.

Which was understandable, considering the appearance reminiscent of Parts 2 and 3; the sack and the un-axed Hokey Mask. One reason I bring this up is to get people to think. If Jason was alive, from resurrection or never having drowned, back in 1980; what did he do for the past 29 years?

My guess, the events of the Franchise we came to know and love. Seriously, did he spend the 29 years digging the mines? No, because there was mention that a sign was put up for them. He wouldn’t build secret mines and then put up a sign for them. He found them, he didn’t make them. The mines also help explain how he gets around so well in the entire Franchise.

Also, Pamela’s Tale shows Elias as a miner, an interesting connection.

So, if we try to say that nothing happened between 1980 and the present; then isn’t that out of character for Jason? In 1980, he felt that his Mother told him to kill for her. Did he just sit on it for 29 years and on 02/13/2009 decide, “Now is the time!” Where we supposed to simply believe that nobody ever tried to go back to Crystal Lake or re-open the camp? Or that he never wondered off site? (Part 8.) Or bounty hunters never came after him? (Parts 4 and 9,) Or that he never caught the attention of the FBI? (Part 9)

I think this was a way for the writers to tell us something. To say the previous 11 movies did not exist would be to say that Jason put Mommy’s head in a hole in the wall and sat there in the dark for 29 years without anyone going into the camp and without him killing any significant amounts of people to draw any sort of large attentions such as the FBI. It just doesn’t makes sense that he would stay alive, angry, and dormant for 29 years. To me, this was the writers’ and Director’s way of saying this really is Part 12, not a reboot.

The GPS Tells us Something

The GPS is another telling sign. As far as I know, no such device existed in the 80s. Or, at least not in such a hand held way that would be readily available to the public. So, the movie has to take place in the true present, 02/13/2009, not as some way of being between Parts 2 and 3.

Let’s Check Shutdown Dates

Wade said that the camp had been shut down for 20 years. Twenty years ago would be 1989. The Camp Grounds were clearly shut down in Part 11. They were also shut down in Part 9. And, it is unclear if they were active or inactive in Part 8; the few minutes we spent there before the boat went off to find the Lazarus. If they were shut down after the events of Part 7, as would be completely possible from what we see in Part 8, they would have been shut down for 20 years just as Wade said.

Now that we have it established that the prologue with Mrs. Voorhees is in 1980 and the rest of the movie is in 02/13/2009 and the six weeks after; we’ve also established that the Camp Grounds have been closed down for 20 years, which fits the timeline of the previous 11 films, and we can assume by his character that Jason did not sit and do nothing for 29 years. The movie is crying out, screaming, for fans to put the pieces together. I hope that I am laying a good foundation here.

Jason doesn’t Need Excuses

The next point I want to make is how this is possible. We must look at how Jason was left at the end of Part 11. Jason was left in Camp Crystal Lake. How many times have we seen him rise from the lake? How many times have we seen him just get up again?

At the beginning of Part 3 we see him begin to crawl and get up from the floor of his shack in Part 2. There was no one having sex. He wasn’t struck by lightning. He wanted to get up and seek vengeance; and he did. So, the idea of him getting up without an outside cause like lightning being needed seems doable to me; he’s done it once before. Also, we’ve seen him rise from the lake in Parts 1 (arguably dream sequence), 4 (goes under for spear kill), 6 (goes under and back up against Tommy), 7 (Tina), 8 Power Cable, 11 (arguably dream sequence.) So, we know he can resurface from water. He even does so again at the end of Part 12! So, he can come back on his own without an outside force and can come back up from water.

Jason Dresses for Success

He had a jacket on at the end of Part 11. Lo and behold, he has a jacket on in Part 12. Now, it is a different jacket yes. But, did he wear the same green shirt from Parts 3 to 4? It’s the type of cloths that stay in continuity, not the actual costume itself. So, just because it’s a different jacket (costume) doesn’t mean it’s a different jacket (storyline wise.)

Jason Regenerates

He is alive again, but don’t be fooled. We know from Jason X that Jason has the ability to regenerate lost and damaged tissue. Even when his mask is taken off in Part 10, he looked more alive than in previous films. I believe Jason could regenerate to being alive again. Once he is alive again, he would be just like he was in Parts 2, 3, and 4. As such, it makes sense to me that Jason simply regenerated back to being alive and young.

Jason’s Age

Let’s take this a bit further. Jason was 11 when he drowned. Part 1 takes place in 1980. Jason drowned in 1957. If Jason did not drown, and instead lived, he would be 39 years old in Part 2. (Jason was 11 upon drowning in 1957. Add 23 to take him from 1957 to 1980. That sets him at 34 in 1980. Now, Paul says that it has been 5 years sense the events of Part 1 in Part 2. This would make Jason 39 years old in Part 2.) If we put that in contexts of The New Friday, Jason would be 63 years old. This new Jason sure is a pretty spry 63 year old. He must exercise well, eat well, lift lots of weights, and really take care of himself in that old cabin to be in such good health at 63 years old. Try imagining Crazy Ralph doing the things Jason does in the New Friday. Get my point?

Jason can regenerate back to a youthful and healthy state of about a 20-30 year old. And, if he can do that, why not be able to regenerate from dead to alive when we already know he can come back from the dead with his own regeneration, given the right inspiration, such as in Part 11. Or, again, even without a direct outside force, such as in Part 3’s beginning.

Relics from the Past

We see the Wheel Chair from Part 2. We also see a bike which could be from Crazy Ralph or one of the Twins from Part 4.

Compile the Proof

Now it makes sense that we have the prologue taking place in 1980. The rest of the movie takes place in 02/13/2009 and the six weeks after. We realize that Jason didn’t sit there and do nothing for 29 years.

We know that Jason must be able to regenerate to a youthful form, otherwise he’s one Hell of a strong 63 year old for someone living off wild game in the woods alone. We know that Jason has come back from the dead on his own accord before, and out of the lake (even in this movie), can regenerate lost and damaged tissue, and with all that, I think we can assume he could become alive again and not just back alive from the dead.

For goodness sake, the camp has been closed down for the time-frame it should have been, just as Wade said; and Jason’s still wearings the same jacket as he did in the previous film! I don’t know why he decided to ditch the Hockey Mask and try the Part 2 look again. Probably the same reason he picked up a Jacket somewhere in one of his Dream Sequences in Hell between Parts 9 and 11; namely Part 10. I guess he just felt like it. But we all know that he got his Hockey Mask back. There is no axe mark, but there wouldn’t be. This is a new Hockey Mask; not the one from Part 11.

A Word From the Writers

I am confident the writers knew what they were doing and that they allowed for this point of view on continuity be true, nay, even encouraged it to the fans paying attention to these details.

“It’s basically, it’s kind of like a sequel. You know what, I think that this movie can still take place and not sort of disregard the other movies. That’s one of the things for us is that we did not want to say, “none of these movies happened.” It was important for us not to say, “Hey we’re starting over and that didn’t exist.” That’s not something we wanted to do… For me, it lives sort of alongside all the others.” - Damian Shannon & Mark Swift – from Script to Screen His Name Was Jason.

So you see, we didn’t get a new Jason. We got to see the original Jason come back in a new way. And, truly, isn’t that what we all wanted anyway? I know I did.

Now that we know the new sequel is due in August of next year the topic of Jason in the snow is coming back up. In an idea floated a while back by producers, we may see at least part of the new film take place in the snow, at least the opening sequence if not more. With pre-production not yet geared up (officially at least), the filming window would appear to be throughout Winter.

With the sequel being Number 13 in the series, is such a milestone the right time to flip the switch on the weather? Vote in our poll below, and sound off with your comments further down.

Yes, we’re a FRIDAY THE 13TH site, but HIS NAME WAS JASON was all kinds of rock, so now that the same creative team are back to conquer Freddy-land, I felt I had to chime in with a show of support. Besides, you just know it’ll be touching on FREDDY VS JASON, though it’ll be from the rarer vantage point of Jason guesting in a NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST instead of the oft-discussed other way around. Read on!

Members of the creative team behind His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th have joined forces once again to bring horror fans the ultimate tribute to yet another landmark slasher series, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy officially began lensing on August 22, 2009, in and around Los Angeles. Starring and narrated by Heather Langenkamp, star of the 1984 classic A Nightmare on Elm Street and two of its sequels (1986’s Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and 1994’s Wes Craven’s New Nightmare), this thrilling 90-minute retrospective promises to be the definitive look at the making of the iconic horror series and the enduring legacy of its wise-cracking, razor-gloved villain: the indefatigable “bastard son of a hundred maniacs” known as Freddy Krueger.

For a quarter century Freddy has slashed his way through the nightmares of two generations of movie-goers in one of the most artful, spectacular, and terrifying film franchises in motion picture history. To characterize the Nightmare on Elm Street series as a modern cultural phenomenon would be a gross understatement. To date, the eight (soon to be nine) Elm Street films have scared up well over half a billion dollars in box office receipts in the U.S. alone, launching the careers of such Hollywood luminaries as Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2), Patricia Arquette (”Medium”), Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential), and even Johnny Depp.

Little did Freddy’s “father“, veteran writer/director Wes Craven, know that his terrifying, child-killing creation would go on to become a cult hero and spawn his very own cottage industry. Today Freddy is practically a household name, with his burned visage, trademark fedora, and red and green sweater appearing on everything from T-shirts to video games to action figures to comic books (Freddy was even the star of his own weekly television series!). It’s safe to say that Freddy Krueger may never rest in peace – nor should he – since his fans keep clamoring for more. Even Newsweek called him “The most popular cinematic maniac since Darth Vader.”

“Freddy is like the ‘unholy spirit’ in the trinity of modern monsters alongside Jason from Friday the 13th and Michael Myers from Halloween,” says co-director and producer Daniel Farrands, who previously helmed the documentary His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th and produced the 2009 Deluxe Editions of the Friday the 13th films for Paramount Home Entertainment. A veteran of the horror genre, Farrands most recently served as a producer of the hit supernatural thriller The Haunting in Connecticut, which has grossed nearly $80 million worldwide. “Freddy and the Nightmare films are icons of our generation, and our documentary will revisit the franchise in an exciting new way that will be respectful to the fans and to the films themselves,” assures Farrands.

Co-director and editor Andrew Kasch (Thirsty) concurs, “The Nightmare series has long been regarded as the most high-brow and creative of the mega horror franchises, so our goal is to make a film that reflects those qualities. While His Name Was Jason was campy and off-the-wall, this documentary will offer a serious chronological account of the creative process – the hardships and triumphs behind one of Hollywood’s most iconic characters. Above all else, this is not a fluff or promotional piece for the upcoming remake but rather will focus on the original series of films that began with Wes Craven’s 1984 classic.”

“The Nightmare franchise has had such a huge impact on the genre and its fans and is truly an important piece of horror history,” adds producer/co-writer Thommy Hutson (His Name Was Jason, Prank). “These films proved that horror could be both terrifying and dramatic, thrilling and groundbreaking. And that’s why we’re so thrilled to bring fans an extensive behind-the-scenes look into Freddy Krueger’s hallucinogenic world like never before. It’s a way of paying tribute to Wes Craven’s original vision which has inspired so many of us … and given us a few really good nightmares, too.”

In addition to the exhaustive feature-length documentary, the two-disc DVD release of Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy will feature over four hours of nightmare-inducing extras, including the original documentary I Am Nancy, written, produced and directed by star Heather Langenkamp, which looks back at the last 25 years since her debut as heroine Nancy Thompson and examines the impact of the Elm Street films on young people’s lives.

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy will be released in the spring of 2010.

What the!? This is the first I’ve heard of FRIDAY THE 13TH 2 filming. It’s quite possible they could be confusing it with another slasher. Platinum Dunes are tied up with A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST currently. But anyway, do you think he’d make a good Jason? Sylvia is 6′8 and weighs 260. What do you think?

Today we are debuting a new fan-written novel in progress called FRIDAY THE 13TH: TOMMY JARVIS. The author is one Christopher Highland, and those who appreciate FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V: A NEW BEGINNING should take note of his continuation of that storyline, as was loosely intended to happen in the series until we got JASON LIVES instead.

A new chapter installment will debut exclusively here on fridaythe13thfilms.com every month, and we already have several stockpiled to give Chris time to work on more. Click below and enjoy!

Vote for Voorhees! FRIDAY THE 13TH DELUXE EDITIONS parts 1-6 have been nominated @ The Reaper Awards, which are described as “the first awards campaign dedicated entirely to horror on home video.” The series of DVD editions are up in two categories:

“Best Re-Release” – while the earlier films in the DELUXE stable could certainly use the encouragement, it’s the second half – parts 4-6 – that really shined, with mouth watering supplementary material put together by Dan Farrands (Director, HIS NAME WAS JASON, and also up for an award in the ghost category with THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT).

“Best Packaging” – regardless of their lack of original poster use, they were very striking which was needed to have them ‘pop’ out among the clutter in stores, and they did maintain a consistency with the covers that made them stand proud on home DVD shelves everywhere! A win would certainly be encouraging for Paramount and a boast for FRIDAY fans everywhere.

“Best Boxed Set or TV Series” - Friday the 13th — The Series: The First Season
“Best Slasher” - The Jason Slasher Collection from Warner Home Video

Here is the cover art to #3 of FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH: NIGHTMARE WARRIORS but our own Christian Sellers recently interviewed series interior artist Jason Craig and you can Read It @ Our Sister Site Retro Slashers!

“Nightmare Warriors is a take on the Nightmare on Elm Street title and literally is a survivor’s story. We have survivors from NOES and F13th as well as cameos from the AOD books. Since AOD books only really have Ash there really were no survivors to carry over aside from Ash himself. This story is a fan boy’s wet dream. This literally picks up seconds after the last story left off, and then goes into a six-months-later scenario where we get to see some classic characters come back, team up and fight Freddy and Jason. This story is The X Files meets horror, we see the Government take interest in the Necronomicon and Jason and Freddy, which hints vaguely at later installments of Jason X where the government again wants to use Jason as a weapon which I thought was an interesting tie-in that’s never really talked about but the fans will notice. This is a story that gets out of the camp grounds, or cabins in the woods, and takes place at our nation’s capital and would make a film with an enormous budget with all the fights. We really pushed to make it the DC Crisis of Horror.”
