In lieu of the announcement that David Grove will be creating a comprehensive retrospective on the original 1980 film, Friday the 13th, we thought we would find out what our visitor’s thoughts were on what they would like to see in this type of book. There is so much that can be included in retrospectives. What type of information would you most like to see about Friday the 13th 1980?

Obvisouly, interviews with cast and crew are must haves. Anecdotal stories about behind the scenes issues are always juicy morsels for every fan to chew on. Probably the biggest contribution to a retrospective are the images of the crew working behind the scenes. These inclusions are what fans yearn for to better understand why they like their cherished movies so much. Outside of these offerings, what else would be a welcomed addition to a retrospective?

If you had a choice, what sequel would you like to see a book soley based on with respect to a specific Friday the 13th film?

Film Prop Thursday: Jason Takes Manhattan Costume http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/film-prop-thursday-jason-takes-manhattan-costume/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/film-prop-thursday-jason-takes-manhattan-costume/#comments Thu, 09 Dec 2024 16:59:21 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13987 There have been a few requests from visitors to see what the Jason costumes look like today outside of the films that they originally appeared in. Most of the costumes used in the films now reside in private collections, such as Mario Kirner’s Friday the 13th Props Museum. I usually forward fans over to his site to get an idea of what the items look like. However, today I wanted to showcase a full prop set of the Jason Voorhees costume from Jason Takes Manhattan.

I posted a story about this several months ago, but thought it relevant to feature these items again as there may have been those who did not get a chance to see them. Below are pics of one of the Jason Takes Manhattan costumes used during production accompanied by analysis of the clothing by Mario Kirner.

Shirt
The shirt itself matches mine 100%. Same brand, same color, same bottons, same secret detail that was added to both shirts by the producion. Just one difference, the condition of the Planet Hollywood shirt is just a bit worse. The big hole below his right hand chest side is ripped through while mine is still a “hole”. And most notable, it features 4 holes on the back while mine has only one hole. I searched through the film and each time you see Jason from the back you see a shirt with one hole only. The last time at Time Square. So I think it has something to do with continuity of the storyline and this shirt was worn by Kane during the toxic wash scenes to simulate the shirt/clothes in a worser condition, when attacked by the toxic.

Mask
The hock looks a bit different compared to mine. The shape is a bit off and the color and paint looks different too. It has different straps and closures attached to it. In 2024 I met the memorabilia manager Carmen Hemus who confirmed that the mask is indeed a replica that was added to round this display up. Mario mentioned and also it is apparent in the full image above, that the Planet Hollywood costume consits of shirt, pants, boots, gloves, head appliance and one arm appliance.

BTS Wednesday: Jason’s Sewer Remains http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/bts-wednesday-jasons-sewer-remains/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/bts-wednesday-jasons-sewer-remains/#comments Wed, 08 Dec 2024 15:44:28 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13974 Every single person I have ever talked to about the ending of Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan universally agrees that it is the worst ending they have ever seen in the franchise. Rob Hedden’s intentions for the ending were at the very least, understandable, however, the execution and overall idea were not very good. The idea that the evil would be removed from Jason by toxic waste and thus leave behind the little boy he once was, just did not fit the mythos at all.

Originally, the end sequence of Jason Takes Manhattan was to showcase a very gooey and eaten away corpse of Jason after being bombarded by toxic waste. The idea of adding the little boy’s body to the sequence was added later. Below are BTS (Behind The Scenes) images of the crew and Jason’s corpse that was supposed to be in the film. Now this would have been awesome to see as Jason’s final appearance!

Jason Slashes Through ‘The Cleveland Show’ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/jason-slashes-through-the-cleveland-show/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/jason-slashes-through-the-cleveland-show/#comments Wed, 08 Dec 2024 01:14:16 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13942 The latest episode of Fox’s The Cleveland Show featured yet another Friday athe 13th series reference as Jason made an appearance to kill a lonely, half naked coed. It would be hard to compare the appearances of the hockey player in the animated episode to the real deal in the films, however, there is that whole whole copyright infringement problem.

The animated episode also showed some other horror refernces as well. If you want to check out the episode follow the Hulu link for your viewing pleasure.

CONFIRMED New Friday the 13th Retrospective Book! http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/new-friday-the-13th-retrospective-book-coming/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/new-friday-the-13th-retrospective-book-coming/#comments Tue, 07 Dec 2024 17:31:16 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13914 Author David Grove just sent us an email confirming that he is creating a new retrospective book pertaining to Friday the 13th. However, this new retro will soley be about the original 1980 film. To fully understand where the new book is going, it would be better to see his explanation, which is below.

I’m planning another Friday book that will be solely about the making of the first film, the 1980 film. This will be to Friday the 13th, the first film, what the Last House on the Left book was to that film, a really detailed book on the making of a single film.

As this book will cover the making of a single film – the first film – the book will cover the making of the 1980 film in painstaking detail, and will include interviews with virtually everyone living who worked on the film.

Although there have been DVDs, books, and other retrospective materials on the first film(I actually published the very first Friday retro in Fangoria back in 2024), I’m confident that I have enough materials, stories, interviews that even most the diehard fans will find fresh and exciting.

So, for fans of the original 1980 whodunit will have something very special to look forward to in the future. We will keep everyone informed of any information that is made public when it happens!

David Grove, who has written for Fangoria and Rue Morgue among other publications, is currently in the planning stages of a second book about the Friday the 13th films for FAB Press, according to www.retroslashers.net. Grove currently completed his biography of Jamie Lee Curtis which chronicles her earlier career in slashers between the years 1978 and 1981. Now it seems he is gearing up for another venture into Friday the 13th land.

David Grove’s first book, ‘Making Friday the 13th‘ was actually released before ‘Crystal Lake Memories’ in the same year, 2024, and offered a different style and layout compared to ‘CLM’. Whereas ‘Crystal Lake Memories’ offered an abundance of pictures and an organized interview layout, ‘Making’ is a well written research documentation of the making of each friday the 13th film with its own brand of picture offering.

We have not been able to confirm definitively if a new book is in pre-production yet, but we will let you know when anything turns up.

Memoribilia Tuesday: Bug Byte Cassette Game http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/memoribilia-tuesday-bug-byte-cassette-game/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/memoribilia-tuesday-bug-byte-cassette-game/#comments Tue, 07 Dec 2024 17:26:48 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13928 The Friday the 13th fans long for an updated video game for the series, but all that is left for the franchise faithful are fan games and memories of the 1980’s. That decade saw the release of Nintendo’s game as well as Domark’s computer game. However, one hot collectable that has also become memoribilia over the years is another cassette game for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum video game system from England. This was also an 8 bit video game system released in the 1980’s and Bug Byte produced this game for that system.

Series collectors love owning this little slice of 1980’s and Friday the 13th lore!

Friday the 13th Artwork Captures Vintage Scenes http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/friday-the-13th-artwork-captures-vintage-scenes/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/friday-the-13th-artwork-captures-vintage-scenes/#comments Tue, 07 Dec 2024 15:13:35 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13916 We happened across Lew Burgess’s Facebook page recently and are really impressed by his skill in drawing characters from film and television. We were even more impressed with his Friday the 13th films themed drawings depicting Alice Hardy from Friday the 13th 1980 and Ginny Field from Friday the 13th Part 2. Both classic scenes show both a vulnerable Alice awaiting her impending meeting with the deranged Mrs. Voorhees and Ginny trapped in a Beetle hiding from Jason.

However, the really interesting drawing is the collage, of sorts, created for the original 1980 slasher. This salute to the franchise originator shows Crazy Ralph, Mrs. Voorhees and Alice along with some key scenery, such as the Diner Steve Christy eats, the docks of Crystal Lake where the kids swim, and the cabin where Ned and Jack meet their demise.

So, take a look at these awesome illustrations and let us know what you think!

Jason Takes Manhattan Head Sculpt Completed http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/jason-takes-manhattan-head-sculpt-completed/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/jason-takes-manhattan-head-sculpt-completed/#comments Mon, 06 Dec 2024 15:50:18 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13905 Over the last few months, Ken McCabe has been sending out updates on his custom 1/6 scale head sculpting project for the different variations of the Jason Voorhees character. We have ssen some truly astonishing work with very high detail, considering how small the heads are. The previous looks at the Part 3 and Jason Goes To Hell head sculpts really are spot on to the appearance of the characters in the films.

In a previous update from October, we saw an in-progress image of a new Jason Takes Manhattan sculpt that, without the paint added, looked really good! Now, we have been provided with a new, completed image of the Part 8 Jason, which is below. The sculpt looks awesome and would surely complete a definitive Jason Takes Manhattan figure.

‘Friday the 13th’ Themed Poster For New Slasher ‘Hanukkah’ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/friday-the-13th-themed-poster-for-new-slasher-hanukkah/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/friday-the-13th-themed-poster-for-new-slasher-hanukkah/#comments Fri, 03 Dec 2024 21:35:19 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13883 Bloody Disgusting just posted up a new teaser one-sheet for the upcoming slasher/comedy, Hanukkah. The new film is gearing up for filming soon and to help push the hype for the film, they sent BD their Friday the 13th themed teaser poster. The poster is hilariously and accurately rendered as the creators did a good job keeping the essence of the original 1980 film’s poster. If you’re interested in what the film will be about check out the synopsis below.

Synopsis
“Obediah Lazarus is the son of Judah Lazarus, the original Hannukiller. In 1983 Judah terrorized NY for seven nights and was preparing to sacrifice his eight-year-old son, Obediah, on the eighth night. Judah was convinced it was God’s will, like Abraham and Isaac, to sacrifice his only son to God. Luckily for Obediah, police tracked Judah down and stopped the sacrifice, but Judah was gunned down in the process. Warped by hatred with no guidance, Obediah Lazarus becomes a religious extremist, intolerant of non-Jews, “bad Jews”, and those he perceives to be enemies of the Jewish faith. He is about to unleash eight nights of horror.

A group of Jewish teens are getting ready to party for the holidays but are in for a Festival of Frights. With the help of a wise rabbi, they deduce that the murder victims have violated Judaic law and that their only chance at survival is to embrace their faith.”

Friday Conversation: Trilogies Within The Franchise http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/friday-conversation-trilogies-within-the-franchise/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/friday-conversation-trilogies-within-the-franchise/#comments Fri, 03 Dec 2024 06:09:45 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13772
Hidden within the Friday the 13th franchise are two trilogy storylines that helped drive the Paramount films of the 1980’s. The first trilogy centers around the events of Friday the 13th Part 2 through Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. These three films not only introduce Jason Voorhees as the maniacal killer of Crystal Lake, provide him the iconic hockey mask, and introduce Tommy Jarvis as a central character in the franchise, but also take place within a fews days of each other.

Friday the 13th Part 2 setup Jason Voorhees as the quintessential slasher and his story and circumstances were ripe for a franchise to be born. The ending of that film left open the possibilities of future Jason adventures and that is exactly what happened. Friday the 13th Part 3 picked up that very same day from the end of Part 2 after Ginny is driven away in the ambulance. Jason leaves the Camp Crystal Lake area and decides to change some clothes before he heads out to Higgins Haven. After meeting up with Chris Higgins and her carefree friends, Jason suffers the iconic fatal axe blow to his head and is left in the barn for the film’s finale. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter begins the very same day as the last shot of Jason laying in the barn at Higgins Haven. After Jason is taken to the morgue, he awakes and heads to the residence of the Jarvis family for this trilogies swan song and the introduction of Tommy Jarvis.

The second trilogy within the franchise is the Tommy Jarvis trilogy, which runs from Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter through Jason Lives: Friday the Part 6. This set of three films do not succeed each other from day to day as the other trilogy does, but they are all tied together by the Tommy Jarvis Character. The three parts of this second trilogy introduce the Tommy character, explore the emotional trauma that he suffered at the hands of Jason Voorhees, and then finally show how he deals with the trauma and his past. Interestingly enough, Jason seems to be the backstory in these films if you follow the  trilogy mode of thought for these three films. Tommy is not as prevelant a character in The Final Chapter, but he plays the most important part in the film by the end of the story.

So, knowing that there is indeed trilogies within the series, which trilogy laid out here is more interesting or relevent to the Friday the 13th franchise? Could these trilogies be watched on their own as seperate film series and be enjoyed solely in that capacity?

Nathan Milliner Illustrates Jason Voorhees And Other Characters http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/nathan-milliner-illustrates-jason-voorhees-and-other-characters/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/nathan-milliner-illustrates-jason-voorhees-and-other-characters/#comments Fri, 03 Dec 2024 03:52:05 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=13872 There is just something special about seeing Jason Voorhees illustrated in an imposing and threatening manner. Some of our favorite images of Jason have been drawn or digitally created for comics and promotional materials. One artist that has captured Jason in an exciting vision is artist Nathan Thomas Milliner. Nathan actually has very few drawings that showcase Jason Voorhees compared to the numerous other creations he has completed. That being said, quality definitely makes up for lack of quantity.

Nathan is very well known for his original artwork, comic books, and his work for Horrorhound magazine. His illustrations for Horrorhound are nothing short of spectacular. We would love to see him create a new Friday the 13th comic book series as he has a great eye for the essence of Jason Voorhees. Check out Nathan’s Jason Voorhees illustrations below and see his interpretation from The Final Chapter based on the likeness created by Wickedbeard.
