Bracket Challenge Finale: Mrs. Voorhees and Jason Voorhees

I know a lot of people have commented on this finale. Some are confused on if we are voting now between these two characters to determine our overall favorite. Not at all. You voted on your favorite character, which is now Mrs. Voorhees. Everyone voted seperately on the favorite Jason so to set up a fun sort of “what if” end of the Bracket Challenge matchup. So, now that we know the matchup is Mommy vs son. My question is would this version of Jason, from The New Blood, cave into Mrs. Voorhees? Does this incarnation of Jason have any remorse left for his mother or is he a pure killing, undead machine that would plow through his mother to satisfy his thirst for killing?

As I mentioned last week, it has been a lot of fun preparing this entire bracket challenge since July. I am glad so many people participated and engaged in conversation about the franchise. There have been a number of visitors that have been, shall I say, unproductive to the discussions, but that didn’t keep visitors from talking about the movies. That being said, everyone has had fun and that’s what it’s all about. I hope everyone enjoyed voting on your favorite characters.

As also mentioned last week, there is a new game, if you want to call it that, brewing for next year. Stay tuned in January for information on that. As for this concluding game, there will be one final set of business to deal with this week and that will be rearing it’s ugly soon within the next day or so. Meanwhile, here are the results of your championship voting.

Both matchups this week were very close. I thought at one point that both might end in a tie. Thankfully, that did not happen. I also wanted to mention to certain visitors that I think that it was pretty poor of you to post under different names and vote multiple times to try to taint the voting. We are down to the final 4 characters in this 4 month long contest. There has beenso much written about these matchups and where the votes rank that now is the time for you to turn out and vote. Some have been skeptical to vote as they think that it won’t matter. I would say to those people just type your character in and see what happens.

Two great characters are about to do battle. Series heavyweight Crazy Ralph and tough guy Sheriff Garris are vying for a spot in the championship round. Make it count and have fun!

The other matchup this week is really, really close. Closer than I thought it would be. Will this new matchup be anywhere near as close? Ali had multiple lives against Jason. To this point, Ali has faced his fellow biker gang and THE Final Guy, Clay. Now he faces his stiffist challenge yet, Ginny. Can he handle his business with her like he handles his business with Fox? “Make a wish.”

Remember everyone, God sent him. Do you need anything else? I still can’t believe how in shape this guy is. He rides his bike all the way to Camp Crystal Lake and the counselor training center and everyone else drives miles upon miles to get there. For a drunk, he gets around town pretty damn well.

Tommy Jarvis (The Final Chapter)
Tommy and Ralph have one thing in common. Both characters are Peeping Tom’s! Tommy spends nights staring at Judie Aronson undressing. Ralph goes to the counselor training center and stares at Ginny undressing. Which perv would you rather pick to go on to the next round? There taste in women could factor in.

Bracket Challenge: The Best Jason Voorhees Character

Now, I want to set this straight right off the bat. This bracket challenge is to pick the best Jason character, not the actors behind the mask. There were many people that contributed to the Jason character in Part 2. Some were stand-ins for hand and feet shots, others did the window crashing scene and wore the infamous sack. Kane Hodder played Jason in four movies, but some people actualy like one Jason character he portrayed better than the other. So, to be fair and follow with the contest at hand, we are voting on the Jason characters themselves within the context of the movie they were represented in. Also, yes I did include Roy. He is playing the Jason character, so all of you Part 5 haters have to deal with it today. Saying that, which Jason is the one you would not want around when going to camp, smoking a little dope, and having a little pre-marital sex?

Ah, the end of Round 2 is here and we have saved the best for last…..? Well, at least it’s an interesting matchup. Who would have ever thought a young Jason Voorhees that jumped out of Crystal Lake to grab Alice and take her down to the bottom of the lake would now have the chance to take a New Yorker down as well. In ten years the franchise sure did change!

Jason desperately wants to meet up with his mommy again, but will he be able to get past the almighty Street Urchin? Perhaps Ari’s band, First Jason, can play some 80’s rap/rock music to keep the Street Urchin rockin out to some rad tunes while escaping to the next round.

Street Urchin (Jason Takes Manhattan)
What can I say, but I really like this guy. If I saw a slimy hockey masked dude walking down the middle of Time Square, I would never think of threatening him with a switch blade. Even if he did knock over my boom box. But Street Urchin confronted Jason and then ran only when seeing the worst makeup job of Jason in the series. A perplexing individual, but still entertaining.

So here we are. Mother versus mother. Can our favorite mother of a pyscho beat our favorite mother of Tommy Jarvis? I think this could be a bit lopsided, but lets see who everyone wants to move on to the next round.

Both of the characters in this matchup have one thing in common, they would do anything to protect their son. One difference is that Mrs. Voorhees kills for her son …… and he’s dead. Oh yea, she also talks like she is Jason as well. What a weirdo!

Mrs. Jarvis (The Final Chapter)
She was very wise and even warned her Tommy about Jason. She told him to lock the door in case some psycho decided to wonder in. Unfortunately, her prediction came true and she met her demise offscreen. Could she take Mrs. Voorhees one on one? If Alice could, why not Mrs. Jarvis?

Now we will we will see a true test of fan loyalty. The trend has been mostly characters from the original 4 movies progressing to the later rounds, however, I think Sheriff Garris has a solid following and is one of the better characters in the series. Everyone loves Officer Dorf, but who really would stand a better chance against Jason, Officer Dorf or Sheriff Garris?

He wants everyone to forget that he lives in Crystal Lake. It was all Tommy Jarvis’s fault that Forest Green turned red. Jason really screwed with that poor son of a bitches’s mind. That being said, Garris wants to take Officer Dorf down. Hit the noise and the cherries!

Officer Dorf (Friday the 13th 1980)
Dorf is looking for somone, a guy named Ralph. Everytime that loony gets drunk he gets his calling and then he spends a week in jail. Will officer Dorf get a chance to catch up with Ralph soon?

I am more than a little curious to see how this matchup turns out. I have a pretty good idea where this is going to end up, but I might be surprised. Roy was a very popular pick when he was voted to the second round, but I wonder how he will stack up against a fan favorite and Police Academy alumn in Axel.

The other coroners did not stand a chance against the superbowl of self abuse. Axel loves Christmas references and finding unique ways to examine cute girls on the slab. He has never matched wits against the likes of Roy, however. Do you think he could be so thoughtful to break a branch off of a tree and try reattaching it?

Roy (Jason Lives)
He was the last surviving paintballer. If only Roy would have stayed lost, he may have survived. He did have the quick reflexes to shoot Jason when he felt threatened. And, Roy is the first person to shoot Jason red, so that has to count for something.

Bracket Challenge Round 2: The Final Guy vs Biker of Higgens Haven

For some, Ali is a relative unknown character that shows up for a few minutes in the movie and gets killed by Jason in a few short seconds, twice. However, his character broke the mold of the original four movies in the series as the only African American male character to be created for use in a Friday the 13th. He does save Chris at the end of Part 3 which sets up the trademark axe to the head shot that Chris delivers.

Clay serves a different distinction to the franchise as a genuine character that is believable and does not come across as stereotypical or comical as some leading men have in past installments of the franchise, which is why he was voted through to the second round. Who deserves to move on to the 3rd round?

Clay (Friday the 13th 2024)
His love for his sister is his drive and motivation. Nothing will stop him from finding his sister. Although he really was no match for Jason, physically, he gave it his all and in the end helped stop Jason in his tracks. If only temporarily.

Ali (Part 3)
Even after getting chopped in the head a few times by Jason… and dealing with Fox and Loco on a daily basis, he still gets back up and confronts Jason one final time. He may have lost his arm, but he gained a special place in Chris’s heart for saving her.
