We have been examining how scenes are created by showing pictures of crews setting up certain shots throughout different films in the franchise. Check out all of our previous looks in the Setting Up The Scene series. Today we’re going to take a brief peak at how the death scene of Ted’s character from The Final Chapter was executed.

Ted’s character is one of the most recognized in the series. His sexual drive, drug use and constant bashing of friend Jimbo set him up nicely to be gruesomely dispathed by Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. For Ted’s death scene, a head was cast of actor Lawrence Monoson’s head and propped in front of the movie screen. Tom Savini then thrust the butcher knife into the dummy head through the movie screen and then with the use of good editing, the effect gives the appearence of the actor getting a big knife to the cranium.

The Special Edition DVD shows the extended death scene with more blood running down the front of the screen. This is one of the more underrated scenes in the film as it has the least amount of gore and blood involved, but it still a favorite of many fans!

Setting Up The Scene: Sheriff Station, Jason Lives http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-sheriff-station-jason-lives/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-sheriff-station-jason-lives/#comments Mon, 29 Mar 2024 05:26:38 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=8918 Usually for this segment I have been showcasing behind the scenes photos on set right before filming was to begin. Today, I thought I would show the cast of Jason Lives running through their lines before their scene in the Sheriff Station where Megan asks her dad to search for the head counselors. I think it’s cool to see what the actors look like when they are not in character in front of the cameras.

Director Tom McLoughlin is in the middle with the blue jacket and Mickey Mouse sweatshirt. I am sure our visitors recognize most of the rest of the people in the photo.

Setting Up The Scene: Jimmy’s Discovery, The Final Chapter http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-jimmys-discovery-the-final-chapter/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-jimmys-discovery-the-final-chapter/#comments Thu, 11 Feb 2024 10:03:42 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=7757 JimmydiscoveryA staple of the Friday the 13th series is the moment one of the last survivors, usually the Final Girl, discovers the multiple bodies of the people that have been dispatched by Jason. In The Final Chapter, Trish goes over to the “party house” with Rob to investigate. After Rob is killed Trish tries to escape through the kitchen door only to run into Jimmy (Crispin Glover) attached to the house.

Here the effects crew is adding a little more blood to Crispin before he is attached to the house for Trish to find. This has always been one of my favorite body discoveries as not only did Jason pin Jimmy to the house, he then rips his hands off of the spikes to quickly move him out of the way so he can get to Trish faster!

Setting Up The Scene: Eva’s Death, Jason Takes Manhattan http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-evas-death-jason-takes-manhattan/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-evas-death-jason-takes-manhattan/#comments Wed, 20 Jan 2024 05:57:16 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=6850 part8discofever
Jason Takes Manhattan is one of those movies, for me, that is awesome in some parts and atrocious in others. Personally, there’s enough apsects of the movie to make me like it enough to rewatch it from time to time. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Jason chases Eva into the dance hall.

I like the way this scene is filmed because the lighting was done so well and I just like that a death scene was being filmed while dance music was playing in the background. Although this scene featured another death in Jason Takes Manhattan with little to no blood, it’s one of the more exciting scenes in the movie to watch.

This scene actually took a long time to film because of the different angles required by Rob Hedden to give Jason the appearance of being at any place of the room at anytime. When Kane Hodder had to choke Kelly Hu, there were a number of takes needed to get just the correct shot of the kill, but by that point Kane was completely tired.

Setting Up The Scene: Hawes’ Death, Jason Lives http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-hawes-death-jason-lives/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-hawes-death-jason-lives/#comments Wed, 23 Dec 2024 05:57:24 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=5965 Hawes’ death was one of the best kills in Jason Lives and still stands up against the best of the franchise to this day. A simple effects shot and just the right amount of blood make for a memorable Friday the 13th moment. Below is a behind the scenes photo of the effects crew setting up Hawes’ death. Check out C.J. Graham holding the heart in-hand while the crew sizes up the dummy torso that C.J. will punch through!

Setting Up The Scene: Part 3’s Dream Sequence With Mrs. Voorhees http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-part-3s-dream-sequence-with-mrs-voorhees/ http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/setting-up-the-scene-part-3s-dream-sequence-with-mrs-voorhees/#comments Mon, 14 Dec 2024 04:17:58 +0000 jasonsfury http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/?p=5780 I am always interested by how filmmakers go about setting up scenes that are going to be filmed. Behind the scene images of these setups are a great time capsule of how each production goes about their scene setup. Below is an on-set photo of the preparation for the dream sequence that Chris (Dana Kimmel) experiences towards the end of Part 3 after she slams the axe into Jason’s head.

For this scene, Mrs. Voorhees was played by the wife of Associate Producer Peter Schindler. According to Dana Kimmel, the scene was supposed to be a one take situation, but of course it went more than one take. Imagine doing multiple takes in frigid water with normal clothes on and no wet suit. Brrr!
