Biography: "Dean Lorey was born and raised in Conyer, Georgia, and he made his career choice early in life. 'I've always loved movies,' he says, 'and always had it in my mind that I would end up doing exactly what I'm doing.'
His ambitions led him to attend New York University's film school, during which he composed book cover copy for Simon and Schuster and Bantam, wrote and produced commercial spots for the MTV and Nickelodeon cable networks and penned, 'one of the cheesiest books ever written,' The Adventurer's Guide to Lazer Tag. 'But I knew that, if I wanted to make it in Hollywood, I couldn't stay in New York,' he explains. 'So I packed my bags and came west in 1990.'
The odyssey of My Boyfriend's Back began in 1989, when Lorey, who had just graduated from film school and 'had no ins in the film business at all,' created a series of black-comic sketches. 'They were about this guy who comes back from the dead as a zombie and having to dela with polite society,' he recalls. 'After I did the sketches, I thought, 'Wow, this might be a cool movie.' So I wrote the script and gave it to my friend Adam Marcus [who would become Jason Goes to Hell's director] to read. He liked it, and when he went out to L.A. to work as a production assistant on Sean Cunningham's House IV, he brought the script with him and gave it to Sean to read.'
The writer's word processor had barely coold down on My Boyfriend's Back when Marcus rang him up with the offer of helping him finally put an end to Cunningham's masked murderer. The early drafts of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, based on a treatment by Marcus, had been scripted by TV writer Jay Huguely. But when the Jason Goes to Hell team decided to go in a different direction, Lorey was called in to do the revisions and the final shooting script." - Fangoria #126 (Summer 1993)
