Exclusive Interview: David Kopp
Rising Canadian actor David Kopp was twenty-four when he was cast as Blake, the best friend of arrogant jock Trey (Jesse Hutch), in the long-awaited crossover Freddy vs. Jason. This had followed minor roles in Romeo Must Die and Josie and the Pussycats, as well as the cult science fiction show Stargate SG-1. Since being slaughtered by Jason Voorhees, Kopp has appeared in Blade: The Series and Psych.
David Kopp looks back on his time on Freddy vs. Jason.
How did you first become involved with Freddy vs. Jason and were you already a fan of the franchise? Were you sceptical about appearing in the eleventh Friday the 13th movie?
Freddy came along just like any other project. My agent called me with an audition and I went in and got it. I have to admit, I had never seen any of the Freddy or Jason movies. I had no scepticism about appearing in it. Sometimes for an actor, any job is a great job.
The movie had been in the works for fifteen years. Do you think it lived up to the hype that fans had created over the years?
I didn’t hear the hype so I can’t know if it lived up to it. That would be a question for you, a fan. That said, I think the movie did a good job blending the characters while hopefully staying true to them. It was certainly a commercial success.
Were you happy with your death scene as most of it happened off-screen. Would you rather have suffered a more graphic death like Trey?
It would have been fun to be killed more graphically, but I think in my situation, the gore and shock was with my father, not me. Anything done to Blake would be secondary to the father’s beheading.
Do you think that fans will ever get to see a sequel to the movie? Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash was a rumoured project for a whole, combining the hero from the Evil Dead films.
I have to say I have no idea. You’ll have to query a studio for that one. Thanks a lot. This was fun. J.
