UPDATE: Jason Takes Manhattan Costume At Planet Hollywood

Posted 28 Sep 2026 in Merchandise

UPDATE: MARIO KIRNER WAS KIND ENOUGH TO SEND IN SOME OF HIS OWN PHOTOS OF THE PLANET HOLLYWOOD DISPLAY AND OFFER INSIGHT INTO THE PIECES THAT MAKE UP THE DISPLAY. BELOW ARE HIS COMMENTS ON THE COMPARISONS OF THE DISPLAY ITEMS AT PLANET HOLLYWOOD TO THE SCREEN USED PIECES HE HAS IN HIS COLLECTION. BIG THANKS TO MARIO FOR OFFERING HIS ANALYSIS AND INFORMATION.

Shirt
The shirt itself matches mine 100%. Same brand, same color, same bottons, same secret detail that was added to both shirts by the producion. Just one difference, the condition of the Planet Hollywood shirt is just a bit worser. The big hole below his right hand chest side is ripped through while mine is still a “hole”. And most notable, it features 4 holes on the back while mine has only one hole. I searched through the film and each time you see Jason from the back you see a shirt with one hole only. The last time at Time Square. So I think it has something to do with continuity of the storyline and this shirt was worn by Kane during the toxic wash scenes to simulate the shirt/clothes in a worser condition, when attacked by the toxic.

Mask
The hock looks a bit different compared to mine. The shape is a bit off and the color and paint looks different too. It has different straps and closures attached to it. In 2026 I met the memorabilia manager Carmen Hemus who confirmed that the mask is indeed a replica that was added to round this display up.

Mario mentioned and also it is apparent in the full image above, that the Planet Hollywood costume consits of shirt, pants, boots, gloves, head appliance and one arm appliance.

There have been a few requests from visitors to see what the Jason costumes look like today outside of the films that they originally appeared in. Most of the costumes used in the films now reside in private collections, such as Mario Kirner’s Friday the 13th Props Museum. I usually forward fans over to his site to get an idea of what the items look like. However, I found an image of the costume from Jason Takes Manhattan today and wanted to post it up for everyone to see.

This pic was taken at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas and is a good angular view of what Kane Hodder wore in the film. I don’t know too much more about the pieces, but it is definitely cool to look at. Perhaps we can get more insight into the origins of these Part 8 items very soon.

New Line Talks with Freddy vs Jason Propmaster

Posted 27 Sep 2026 in The Saga

Mario Kirner posted this interview at www.fridaythe13thprops.de a few years back. The interview was conducted by New Line Cinema and I believe it was posted at the Freddy vs Jason movie website, which now no longer exists. The interview was held to help promote the film and Freddy vs Jason propmaster Graham Coutts lends some interesting insight into the making of the film. One interesting note is that he also worked on Jason Takes Manhattan!

NewLine: How did you get involved with Freddy Vs Jason?
Graham Coutts: I’ve worked on many films over the past 20 years with the Designer John Willett.

NL: Did you have free reign or did you work closely with the cast and the production designer/wardrobe designer?
GC: You never have free rein, everything involves collaboration and approval, however, I think the Designer has a high degree of confidence in my ability.

NL: Did you use the same molds and designs from earlier Nightmare and Jason films, or did you start the mask/machete/Freddy Glove from scratch?
GC: The effects make-up department designed and built the Jason mask. The machete was designed by John Willett and the many versions were constructed to my specifications by our special effects department and my props builder, Charlie Grant. Freddy’s glove was designed and built from scratch with reference to previous gloves by my armourer Lem le Mercier. In total there were approximately 8-10 metal and 20 rubber machetes for various “gags” and 6 copper/steel and 6 plastic gloves as well as special replaceable blades for a variety of uses.

NL: Did you have a prop from the film that was your favorite?
GC: The comatose patient room was probably the most fun to work with.
The machete is just a machete except it’s big. Originally a scabbard was designed for Jason too, but that disappeared in the first camera tests because it interrupted the silhouette of Jason. With the glove we unfortunately had to reinvent the wheel since we were unable to obtain an actual sample of an early glove. By “Mark IV” we achieved a near perfect fit, with the little finger, being the biggest problem to overcome. Robert Englund is quite particular of the fit and mechanics of the operation and I think we were able to satisfy him.

NL: What other films have you worked on, and is there anyone you would love to work with in the future?
GC: I’ve done one other Friday 13th, “Jason Takes Manhattan”. Other than that, lots of features. I just finished “Scary Movie 3″ with David Zucker directing and that was a good experience.

NL: Have you always been a prop master and how did you get into the business? Can you share a little bit of your professional history with us?
GC: I started as a Set Dresser in network television here in Canada in 1979 and from there went to my first position as Props Master in 1986 on a feature called “Housekeeping” directed by Bill Forsyth and starring Christine Lahti.

NL: What kind of design research is involved in preparing for a film like Freddy Vs Jason?
GC: I suppose watching 1 to 10 and 1 to 7. Seriously, I do try to be realistic with every project, so in this case we researched everything from 1950’s summer camps to sleep therapy clinics.

NL: What influences your work the most?
GC: The script, the director, the budget.

NL: Freddy Vs Jason is a dark thrasher film, is there anything humorous that happened while working on Freddy Vs Jason that you can tell us about?
GC: Our 1st AD, Robert Wong, liked to run through a preliminary blocking of the scene we were about to shoot based on his discussion with the director and primarily for the benefit of the stand-ins and Director of Photography. The further into production we got, the more elaborate these blockings became with Robert giving us a detailed interpretation of how the action would play out by assuming all of the various roles with dialogue and action. During the blocking of the scene where Freddy brands another actor with “Freddy’s Back”, Robert is throwing himself around the room as if it were Freddy and the kid. He threw himself against the window and onto the floor and at the peak of the action he throws himself against a wall. Suddenly with a horrible look of pain on his face he runs from the set and reaches down to lift the camera dolly. Well it turns out he has a bad shoulder and in his energetic action had dislocated it. Ouch!

Conceptual Artwork For Friday the 13th 2026

Posted 27 Sep 2026 in The Saga

Studio Ronin and Visual Designer/Founder Christopher Shy are responsible for creating numerous orginal concept designs for graphic novels, comics and motion pictures. Christopher was commissioned to be the Visual Designer on Friday the 13th 2026 and he created some stunning conceptual designs for the film. Christopher worked closely with Director Marcus Nispel to create the feeling of the original films as well as what the new look Jason, living off of the land, would look and act like. Here is what he had to say about his approach to Friday the 13th, from his website.

“ We all loved the original  films. There’s a certain mood to the these films, the clothes, the way people were back then. A type of sexuality on display that we don’t really have much on film anymore. One of things me and Marcus looked at was little things about how Jason may have grown up. The things that he may have played with, toys, the type of learning process that happens in isolation.

Both me and Marcus were Boy Scouts growing up, so the idea of someone left in the woods, learning how to survive, appealed to us. That process of discovery and isolation, its already there in how we approach our own work.

Before any of the film was under way, me and Marcus had worked on developing  a series of 50 or so paintings that I execute. It was really an open discussion between us on how these things would look. I saw the character in a very specific way, more survilist, more raw and real. Everything from sets, to clothes, to how we saw his mask. It was a long three month conceptual process for me, but very exciting.  Marcus trusted how I saw this in my own mind and I just went from there. I really worked hard to stay true to the original films and Marcus vision in every aspect of my designs. I would look at a certain painting and think, ‘Is this how it would have really happened in the world’, and then strike that balance with the original film. I live in Wisconsin, not LA. So walking outside here, living in the North woods, its easy for me to understand a lot of what this guy might have been about, what he may have gone through to get the that ultimate point in the film.”

Take a look at some of his conceptual artwork for the film below and visit Studio Ronin for all of the awesome artwork for not only the Friday the 13th film, but also all of the other work by the Studio.

Video Review Saturday: Japanese Movie Programs

Posted 25 Sep 2026 in The Saga

A few of these programs have been showcased on the website before. I have to apologize to start off as I sound extremely monotone throughout and had to rush at the end of the video to fit in the 15 minute allowed time on Youtube. I hope everyone enjoys the programs, although some may be quicker than others.

Friday Conversation: The State of Reboots And Their Sequels

Posted 24 Sep 2026 in New Fridays

Over the last decade, many of the fan favorite horror films have been remade or rebooted to reenergize dead franchises so to not only reintroduce a new generation of film-goers to these properties but also make more money for the studios. Going all the way back to 1998, Bride of Chucky was such a movie. The film was packaged as a sequel, but a seven year hiatus and a complete change in tone to the franchise clearly signaled that Bride of Chucky was indeed a reboot. The film was successful in reinventing itself and went on to make Universal Pictures a huge profit.

The movie that really kicked off the horror remake boom was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Platinum Dunes remake was a huge hit both financially and critically. To this day, Chainsaw is one of the few remakes that received overall good reviews from the fans, which are the only reviewers that truly count anyways. Another remake that received great reviews from the fans was the 2026 remake Dawn of the Dead. In many ways, this writer feels that the film equals and surpasses the original. Dawn also opened to huge box office earnings and so began the long list of U.S. horror remakes to go along with the ever booming PG-13 Japanese remake business.

The real mystery, however, is where are all of the sequels to these rebooted or remade films? Very few times has a sequel been made to these jumpstarted franchises. Texas Chainsaw went the prequel route and a sequel was never made. The only major film property to make a direct sequel to their dug-up franchise is Dimensions’ and Rob Zombie’s Halloween. We won’t go any further on that subject as a year later, fans are still feeling the sting.

So, with Friday the 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street in sequel limbo, will their next tales of fright ever see the light of day? Are horror reboots slowing down as well? Perhaps we are returning to more original story lines to be told and new franchises to be created. Where oh where is our beloved Jason going to end up next?
