Friday Conversation: Opening Weekend Gross Of The Reboots

With A Nightmare On Elm Street opening today, and that franchise inexplicably tied to Friday the 13th for perhaps all eternity, I thought a question could be asked. Do you think that A Nightmare On Elm Street will open close to or more than the $40 million gross of Friday the 13th 2024? It is definitely a possibility. There has been a lot of hype surrounding Nightmare and Warner Bros. has been spectacular with promoting the film. That being said, there are some major obstacles for the movie to get around.

One, it’s the last weekend of April. This is typically the slowest time of year, right before the Summer movie season begins. Friday the 13th opened at a date in February that is fast becoming a huge slot for big grossing movies. Even if Nightmare reaches the heights that Friday the 13th did a year ago on its opening weekend, the fall the following weekend may be just as epic. Whereas Mr.Voorhees had no major competition or Summer movies to deal with in his second weekend, Freddy has to compete with Iron Man 2 in his second week. Needless to say, there is a deep fall coming for the Nightmare franchise next weekend.

At any rate, both franchises have now seen their revivals and both will have experienced financial successes. Lets hope that both franchises’s second weekend dropoffs don’t seriously dampen the studios’ thoughts on creating further sequels.

  1. The only reason there was such a huge drop-off for f13th reboot was that everyone saw it on the opening weekend. For Nightmare, I think it will go like the original in the 80’s, slowly over a few weeks. Like you said it’s opening at the end of the month which is not a good idea, but it should make a good chunk of money if given time.

  2. There is no way this movie will make even close to what Friday The 13th made. I have been reading bad reviews on almost every movie news site I have visited today, not to mention that I lost interest in this the day they replaced Robert Englund(dumbest move ever and certain death to this movie). Plus they chose to use a music video director instead of an actual film director(dumb move). This movie is (as Crazy Ralph would say) DOOMED!

  3. Honestly, with all of the negative reviews, I will be surprised if it makes more than Friday the 13th. I am hoping it does… but I have my doubts.

One thing I don’t doubt is that there will be a MAJOR dropoff the second week thanks to Iron Man 2. I believe it will disappear from theaters quickly and I am disappointed by this.

  4. I’m not overly excited about Freddy movies, plus this looks like a “scene-for-scene” remake with new special effects. I’ll prob wait for dvd for this one…

  5. something doesn’t seem right about this elm street. I saw the trailer in theaters and thought it just looked dumb. Don’t like the choice for Freddy, although that actor is great.

Friday the 13th actually looked scary in the trailer, and had a certain something going on. I don’t think the movie lived up to it, however, but it will still be better than this.

Is there an audience for a new elm st? Probably. I think it will outdo F13 at the box office, but maybe not by much.

  6. Just going by my own experience, I saw the F13 Reboot at its midnight showing at the same theater as ANOES last night. F13 was sold out, people being asked to move seats in order for couples to be able to sit next to one another, there was applause after the awesome intro, the crowd seemed to eat it up. Last night, the theater was only 3/4 full, with a few handclaps at the end and a sound of disdain. I don’t think Freddy will do as good as Jason.

  7. @ratta tatta touille yeah F13 actually looked creepy in the trailer, with Mrs. Voorhees’ narration, shots of the lake, it gave it the campfire story vibe. Whereas Nightmare didn’t have that creepy vibe.

And yeah, I think the F13 reboot was better than ANOES.

  8. I too think it will be hard for Nightmare to hit $40 million, I would say more like $25-30 million.

  9. I hope Freddy does well. If the studio use Freddy success to determine whether they will invest more in the genre, then we could see Jason sooner. 80’s horror must live on, so if it takes a popular Freddy to ensure more Jason, then lets hope Freddy is a major hit. Right?

  10. I going to go see it hopefully this week-end. I hope it leaves me with the same feeling after I left the F13 reboot. Thinking to myself, that was a fucking great movie!

  11. I HERD IT SUCKS REAL BAD, 4 OF MY FRIENDS SAW IT LAST NIGHT THEY SAID THAT FRIDAY THE 13TH WAS BETTER AND THEY WERE NOT A FAN OF THE REBOOT,,IT WAS A REAL SHITTY BORING REMAKE .IT HAS THE FIRST 3 MOVIES COMBINED LIKE WHAT THEY DID WITH THE JASON REBOOT ,AND THERE WAS 1 GOOD PART MY FRIEND SAID BUT HE WOULD NOT TELL ME CAUSE IM GOING TO SEE IT TONIGHT BUT YA FOR ALL ITS WORTH GO TO ROTTEN TOMATOES AND IT WILL TELL YOU THE SAME THING. THAT SAID IT WILL STILL MAKE MONEY !!!

  12. A Nightmare On Elm Street will gross way more money than FT13th did. And the reason for that is Freddy’s fanbase is extremely higher than Jason’s. At least in this town anyway. When My brother and I saw Jason X at the theatre opening day, there was barely anyone there. But when a friend and I went to see Freddy Vs Jason opening day, 3 shows in a row were sold out. And the majority of the crowd was talking about Freddy. Even if Kane Hodder wouldve played Jason in that piece of crap film, the results wouldve been the same. NOES has always had more storyline and effects. Why? well because it deals with nightmares. Im not saying Freddys better than Jason. Jasons My boy and the best icon in horror history. But I believe the huge Freddy fan base will make this remake more grossing than FT13th. And thats another thing, when My brother and I saw the FT13th remake, it wasnt as crowded as it shouldve been. And that was opening weekend. My love for Freddy died once He became a comedian. He had some good jokes and all, but He was no longer scary to me. Not like part 1, which is why Ill be attending the remake, It seems they made Freddy scary again.

  13. Just saw ANOES remake, the place was about half full. Don’t think it will do as much as F13 reboot at all. I’ll leave my comments on the movie for a later discution.

  14. Just saw the Nightmare reboot. They did a good job with the movie, and Haley does a good job filling Englund’s shoes. There were a few drawbacks for hardcore fans (especially with the backstory on Freddy), but being it’s my second favorite horror series I think they did good. The CGI sucked, reminded me of seeing Reptile in the second Mortal Kombat movie lol. And Jablonski’s score was great, even though sparse. They really should bring him back as composer for the F13th sequel when it finally gets going, he does a good job setting atmosphere.

  15. Steve W, you complain about a music director directing this & think they should stick to an actual movie director. I hate to break it to you, but many well known directors got started doing music videos before they direct movies. David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Brett Ratner, etc. are perfect example of that.

dennis, this remake isn’t a “scene-to-scene” like the trailer show you. I promise. This isn’t Psycho ‘98 or anything like that. Sure they use few iconic scenes from the original, but there are more original stuff in this film than that though.

  16. WOW OK I SAW IT IT SUCK’S ITS WORSE THEN FRIDAY THE 13TH PEOPLE IN THE MOVIES WERE BOOING THE SHIT OUT OF IT IT’S NOT FREDDY ,,HE IS OK BUT HE LOOKES LIKE HE HAS AIDS AND IS BURNED ,,,IT SUCKS SO BAD I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BETTER THE JASON I WAS SOO WRONG THEY FUCKED UP AGAIN ,,PLEAS GIVE UP DONT DO HORROR ANY MORE,!!!! 4 REAL…!!I GIVE IT A 2 OUT OF 10….!!1stay home,,

  17. Just got in from Freddy. It was nice. JEH had a very dark punctual fuck you in your face take on it…unsure how much it’ll gross over the w/e but we shall see…I’m even going again.

  18. I saw it at midnight Thursday and I thought it was good but others there didn’t. But the theater definately wasn’t sold out. Good luck platinum dunes!

  19. It will withput a doubt do better than F13thm, but it willnot be a good movie. They should have “restarted” it in present day with Englund as Freddy and NOT reboot the timeline.

  20. i saw it and thought it kicked ass, it wasnt scene for scene wich was good, the only drawback is that freddy isnt a child killer like in the original, but its the same idea, wasnt as gory but it had some good kills, in your face kills, and it played out well and haleys freddy is gritty and sick, and he has a mild and sick kinda of humour about him, it carries the same evil tone the original had, before they got corny and cornier. good fuckin times if ya ask me!

  21. Again, I am going to wait to see Elm Street from a friend. It just isn’t the same without Robert. Jason was never tied completely to one actor. Kane played him for four films, and that was awesome. But he wasn’t there from day one. Robert was Freddy. And now it’s just not the same. They also could have done something new with the story. From what I was reading, it sounded like they took it in every direction that I did not want to see it go.

Freddy not the killer and was burned alive for nothing, and now seeks revenge? That’s what I read, is that right? If so, that changes the entire concept of the character. A re-boot that changes the actor, story, and formula of the character. That’s exactly what I did not want in new Elm Street and that what almost everything I read said it was. I don’t want to spend my money on this and act as an enabler. That’s why I’m waiting to barrow it from a friend to see if it’s really what it sounds like it is.

  22. Well I must eat my words now. I posted on here a while ago about A Nightmare On Elm Street not being good and that it would suck and all. I went and saw the movie tonight and I must say, it was alot better than I thought it was going to be. It had pretty much everything Friday the 13th (2009) was missing, in my opinion. It had a story, it does change some things about Freddy but we all suspected what they brought to light anyway. It has a score!!! And a pretty good one from what I heard. I wish they would have made this much of an effort with Jason but oh well hopefully they get it right next time. JEH was a sick twisted fuck in this movie, he made Freddy as sick as I always thought he was but never saw it. Yes Robert Englund will forever be Freddy Krueger, but they did do the original justice. More than they did with Jason. I don’t know if this movie will make more than Friday the 13th… When I was at the theater it was only about 20-25 people there and when I went to see Friday the 13th last year it was pretty packed out all three times.

  23. I saw NOES on opening night and the theater was packed. There were like 3 seats left and the two showings after mine were sold out.

The remake was really good. People that say it was terrible must not watch movies much or had expectations set so high that no film could ever exceed it.

The only complaint is about the way Freddy looked. It was annoying about how his face looked… idk I’m just a fan of the Robert Englund look I guess.

I went into the show thinking that it was going to be terrible and came out smiling. I think it did a better job than the originals in explaining what the hell happened to Freddy and actually telling a story rather than just jumping into it. Overall I give it a B. Better than the F13 Remake and I love Jason a billion times more than Freddy.

Give the movie a chance and stop thinking that it’s going to this all out amazing movie and set your expectations to something realistic. It’s not going to “Avatar” and never will. These are horror movies. They are C movies at best. Stop thinking you are going to go see an A movie and trust me, you will be pleased with the outcome.

Why expect something that’s never going to happen? Be realistic and enjoy the fun of the movie.

Is Aaron Yoo the only person to ever be killed by both Freddy and Jason?

  24. went and payed for my sister in law to see it, i told her it was good, she went with my neice(seeing it for the 2nd time)and her boyfriend, they all jumped several times and my neices boyfriend had his hands over his face almost the whole movie. great job with this one!

  25. The Nightmare remake was waaaaay better than the one they did for F13.

  26. The Friday remake was waaaaaaaay better than the one they did for NOES.

also, Freddy did not top jason on opening weekend. and i though freddy had more fans. guess not. GO JASON!

  27. Are you really going to say that higher box office revenue = a better movie? Because if you are then Titanic is the best movie ever made.

    GO TITANIC!

  28. well, it topped the box office so far this weekend! im a way bigger friday fan than a noes fan, i casually watch them, but in my opinion, this movie was better than any of the other noes films. the kills and werent as good as friday but this one was slightly scarier than friday 09, they both scared the shit outta me though!

  29. I’m a bigger F13 fan myself…always have been and always will be. But I do think that the NOES remake was a better film overall than the F13 remake. To me, the NOES remake just felt more in sync with the traditions of the its franchise. All of the cheese that I am use to in the NOES franchise was there and the kills were creative for the most part. I thought this film was a good way to usher the concept of Freddy Kruger to a new generation of fans. I wish I could say the same for the F13 remake but I can’t…too many elements of the franchise were simply missing from the remake. Maybe the problem was that the writers try to cram three separate films into one movie???

  30. I enjoyed it, It was kind of a different take on old Fred but at the same time it played a lot of homage to the original. The sfx were 50/50 some were great while some made you think it would of been better off not using CGI. The new actor playing Freddy did a good job not trying to simply imitate Dave’s performance.

  31. Hey Jimbo I am in agreement with you on everything you said except for the part about the reason the elements were missing from the F13th remake. I don’t think the problem was with them trying to cram 3 movies into one, the problem is with the writers! Shannon and Swift cannot, for the life of them write a good movie. Well let me rephrase that, the can’t write a good Jason/ Friday the 13th movie. But everything else you said is right on.

  32. hey sinz86, who is dave?
