Biography: "Tom McLoughlin's background in mime companies was apparent in the script for his first movie, One Dark Night. It had 80% visuals and 20% dialogue. As a student in Paris in the late 1960s, McLoughlin once visited the catacombs of wall to wall human skeletons – under the city is how the French buried their dead centuries ago. This experience left an indelible mark on his young psyche. Not surprisingly, he envisioned a story entitled Mausoleum, a strong and claustrophobic-sounding word in itself. To research, McLoughlin visited dozens of mausoleums and cemeteries from San Diego to San Francisco. 'We would go to the mausoleum and with some early corpse effects, we took pictures and made a slide show to show investors.'" - One Dark Night Page On the set of Prophecy (1969) he met his future wife, Nancy McLoughlin, who plays 'Lizbeth' in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Tom often casts his wife in smaller parts in the features he directs.

Quote: "I grew up in Culver City, and my dad went to USC film school in the '40s, so I had the MGM backlots to play in when I was a kid. On weekends, I'd jump over the fence and bring my friends, and we'd make these semi-horror movies or James Bond movies or A Hard Day's Night. Then I moved to Paris when I was 19, where I studied fencing, acrobatics, modern dance, classical dance - and I was literally right across the street from a cinema that would change movies three times a day. So all those years were just the greatest experience of soaking up everything art and film. I came back to America wanting to make silent, visual movies, like Jacques Tati and the people I'd seen over there. Then I went on tour as a one-man performer - I did pantomimes, like Sid Caeser and Red Skelton used to do, only I tried to make it relevant to my generation, so it dealt with drugs and cars and earthquakes. But I began to see that mime was very limited and that there was only so much I could do by myself. So I got a partner and put together the L.A. Mime Company, and eventually Dick Van Dyke came and saw us and asked us to be regulars on Van Dyke & Company, a short-lived series in the '70s. But he started letting me write and direct for whoever was the guest star, and suddenly I'm directing Lucille Ball, Freddie Prinze, Carol Burnett.
