Biography: At the time he wrote Friday the 13th Part VII, Daryl Haney was a New York-based actor with an extensive background in Off-Broadway theatre and a feature film debut at eighteen in the Canadian feature Self-Defense. Brought to Los Angeles by legendary "King of the Bs" Roger Corman, Haney soon found himself with a second career as a writer. Haney was brought to the attention of producer Frank Mancuso Jr., who was looking for a writer to "revitalize" the series after his original notion for Part VII, "Jason vs. Freddy", had been recently shelved. Haney had never seen a Friday the 13th movie but rented all six and came up with several ideas, including one inspired by Carrie, which Mancuso approved. He relocated to California to complete the screenplay. To date, he's responsible for over twenty feature-length produced screenplays, including Crime Zone and Masque of Red Death for Corman, a sequel to the Eighties cult favorite Xtro, the black comedies Erasable You and Life Among the Cannibals and the true-life drama Mockingird Don't Sing. He also continued to pursue acting, including a part in The Sketch Artist, two films produced in the former Yugoslavia, Rat Uzivo and Drugi Covek and, most recently, roles for underground filmmakers Burke Roberts and Damon Packard, whose Reflections of Evil was directly inspired by Seventies horror classics.

I said, 'I notice that at the end of these movies, there's always a teenage girl who's left to battle Jason by herself. What if this girl had telekinetic powers?' Barbara immediately said, 'Jason vs. Carrie. Huh. That's an interesting idea.' Then we talked once or twice before I had to go back to New York. The next day I had literally just flown in and walked up the stairs of my old apartment, and the phone rang. It was Barbara saying: 'You got the job.' From then on out I was constantly on the phone with Barbara back in L.A. and we were talking about the script. Her whole thing was that she wanted it to be unlike and other Friday the 13th movie. She wanted it to win an Academy Award.
