For The Friday The 13th Faithful: Sequel Update

POSTER_SequelI get a good amount of email every week asking about the fate of the sequel to last years series reboot. I have been also reading a lot of questions about the sequel on the Chat box and even within the blogs that have nothing to do with the sequel. So, I thought I would throw everyone a bone and give a small update on the status of the sequel. Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes recently mentioned via Twitter the following pertaining to the sequel:

“My job is to give the studios what they want- and they dont seem interested in Friday 13 part 2″

So, there you have it everyone. There is zero interest in the sequel as of right now and nothing is happening in terms of a production. My guess is that there may be nothing in terms of sequel buzz until the summer, perhaps after A Nightmare On Elm Street is released. Even after that, Platinum Dunes is in the beginning stages of their remake of The Monster Squad. So, we will have to wait and see…

Here is the previously posted Q&A from January that will hopefully help with all of your questions:

Questions

1. Has the project been greenlit?
2. What is the release date going to be?
3. Is there a script finalized?
4. Can you share the unused script?
5. Will Derek Mears return as Jason?
6. Will you bring back Harry Manfredini back to score the movie?

Answers

1. PD is pushing to get this into production, but at this time, the sequel has not been greenlit.
2. Since the movie has not been given a go there is no release date yet.
3. There is a script turned in, but Warner did not greenlight it.
4. Cannot share the script as you don’t know what will happen with production.
5. Would love for Derek to come back and can’t imagine doing the sequel without him.
6. Harry Manfredini would be an interesting idea.

Funny that Brad said that cause if I am not mistaken hasn’t that been the case with EVERY Friday the 13th movie? The studio’s do not want anything to do with it but then they do it anyways and CLEAN UP!

So I’m not nervous about that comment, because we all know when the money gets low they will put out another one. Just a shame that’s all they will ever see the series as… “money”.

  2. Remaking The Monster Squad? Gaaahhh….when will the madness end?

  3. give it back to paramount!!!

  4. @Zach

I’m with you brother. I like occasional remakes, but if they don’t stop this the new generation will never know anything about “originals” because they will always relate all movies titles to the remakes.

That is just one part of the problem in my opinion.. The biggest fear is they will continue to let the “same person” do these movies.

I have nothing against Brad Fuller or Michael Bay or hell Dunes Platinum as a whole, but if you continue to give him all these remakes they will continue to all look the same. I like some of his vision to be honest, plus I actually liked the “look” of the TCM ramake when it was released. In the end though, I like the variety in various minds behind the scenes and I’m getting bored with his look and feel.

Too much of anything can eventually get stale.

You just hit the ball outta the park with that statement. And personally id like to see another production company pick up the sequel. I mean dont get me wrong i liked the sequel (for the first 20 minutes) but in all honestly i dont believe the movie in there hands is the best choice.

  6. We need something different but not Halloween II (2009) different. The studios should know by the fanbase that they can rake in plenty of money with a part 2.

  7. ok…we knew that. WARNER hates these franchises. first “nightmare”, it will be out just a week before IRON MAN 2 and that means “killed” by the iron. now Friday part 2, fuller always said that warner didn’t want to make it. so i bet the franchise is dead. thanks warner!
we should do something. a petition or something!

  8. I think that Lionsgate would be a great choice for a studio to take over distribution of this franchise. They have proven they will push the limits in gore and the marketing they put forth on movies is awesome! Also, I would like to see Todd Farmer take another crack at this franchise. I know in general, Jason X was not received well, but that was not necessarily his fault. Lionsgate plus Todd Farmer could be a good combo!

  9. wow this sucks!! sell the movie to someone who will take it..! or it must realy suck the script 4 part 2!!

  10. I’d also like to see a new production company. Even though I liked the reboot quite a bit, I’ve never been a fan of Platinum Dunes, or Swift and Shannon. I can’t say I really liked Todd Farmers first outing, but like you said, it wasn’t his fault, and apparently his first draft was way better than the finished product. He seems pretty cool too, so maybe he would be a good choice. Seems like a real fan.

I’m not sure I’d like Lionsgate to touch it either. The last couple Lionsgate releases I saw were really dark and quite loud. Not really the quality I think we’d accept for a Friday.

I do like the idea of giving the series back to Paramount. Whether they see it as just a cash cow or not, more often than not they’ve turned out something we all like to watch. And I bet Joe Zito wouldn’t mind another crack at it either.

You’d think those guys at Platinum Dunes would be pushing a bit harder for Friday 2. “My job is to give the studios what they want” really says to me we’re corporate whores who love money. I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same, but not with Friday. Probably because, much like all of you, I’m attached to the series. I guess they just see it as another property as well. Sad.

  11. I think I like Brad Fuller the least of the PD staff.

  12. Hey Jasonsfury, You guy know that Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures Picked up the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre right? So friday getting picked up by them is also not too par petched of an Idea. I personally Agree with you 100 percent. If anyone gets the rights to Friday, Lionsgate would be my first choice

  13. also sorry im typing in the dark. i mean Far Fetched. not par petched lol

  14. Lets just hope that after NMOES has dies down, it wil change, and yes give it back to Paramount!!!

  15. It seems theres no room for sequals to horror films these days (except the saw franchise). Its all about remakes as We all know. And not just horror, but every type of film. I mean cmon someones got the nerve to remake Clash Of The Titans? I have no interest. I find it hard to believe that theres no interest in doing a sequal. Its kind of hard to come up with something new for Ol Jason. Through 12 films Hes done alot, killed people in so many different ways, and died so many ways. The only idea I keep hearing about is Jason in the snow. Big whoop. I mean thats it? Might as well do Jason Takes Alaska. One thing that I do know is that there never going to stop making FT13th films. Thell be making them way after Im gone. Theres been A Final Chapter, and a Final Friday. And well, We all know thats not true. Part 2 will happen, its just a matter of when. Oh and by the way, The original Monster Squad sucks!!! Platinum Dunes must be running out of movies to remake.

  16. UM …THE ORIGINAL MONSTER SQUAD KICKED ASS,, I WOULD NOT MIND A REBOOT OF THAT WITH ALL THE OLD MONSTERS BACK !!! BUT FOR FRIDAY THE 13TH I THINK THE REBOOT WAS NOT MADE FOR A PART 2 AFTER WATCHING IT 10 TIMES BUT im sure they can do it or just make a part 12 or 13 that just goes back ing the story line like 15 years ago type shit lurking in the woods pre part 4 !! i think they are fucking with us lol..there will be more fridays trust me!!

  17. Yep…. I also must second what Jason’s Fury has said about Lionsgate – they seem a promising choice. Spookily enough, I was only chatting to some mate’s last week, about Todd Farmer being given a stab at the sequel! (No pun intended….. honest! :) )
Whatever happens, I think the only ‘given’ should be that Derek Mears returns as Jason!

  18. I would love to see Joseph Zito get the director’s chair for a Part 2….He understand’s the franchise, and knows how to do it “Old School”. Platinum Dunes is too worried about creating iconic shots, and polishing the look. Not enough substance & suspense.

  19. I’m gonna jump on this Liongate bandwagon too because they would to be the only credible firm out there with enough balls to at least try to deliver the goods on a Friday The 13th movie. All in all i’m not worried about any sequels not being greenlit. As historians of this franchise will know Jason’s roots are drenched in long spells of production hell and studio’s scared/ashamed to take a gamble on any further sequels.Having said that there have been 12 movies and with the next in line being the 13th of the series i think that may prove to mouthwatering a proposition for any studio.Imagine the countless cash ins to be had of the 13th entry, smells like cash money to me.It might take years as opposed to months to get the ball rolling on this one,but at some point it will happen. As long as WE exist Jason and Friday The 13th will too.Remember, true evil never dies……………KI,KI,KI,MA,MA,MA.

  20. I could care less about the Monster Squad remake, but I do like the original, I just want f13 part 2!!!!!

  21. i think that PD is waiting to see just how well nightmare will do before any other horror project gets the green light, if friday doesnt get greenlit this year i wouldnt see part 2 happening. Would Lions gate take over, nope… to big of a risk on a movie that just wont make the money… unfortunatly its not about the fans, so u got to take it in there perspective, if u had made a movie for 23 million dollars u want to make money i mean or its a bust…. and who knows how the friday film would do the 2nd time around.

  22. I hope PD doesn’t make I love Jason and F13, but lets face it the remake sucked ass.

Jason will be back, Hollywood doesn’t let money makers die… just keep it ways from PD and it may be good.. it may even have a score!!! LOL

  23. oh well…

At least we can still look forward to A Nightmare on Elm Street (remake) being the best comedy film of the season.

  24. here a question???
in 10/20 years from now will they remake/re-image/reboot the remakes/re-images/reboots???
if they do I’m opening up my own Aussie backyard horror studio!LOL

  25. Monster Squad remake! IS nothing sacred! Of course Friday II is not greenlit, they are too busy giving the studio what they want which is to completely remake every horror movie in exhistence. When will they learn! What will it take for this to end! Good thing Casablanca isn’t a horror flick or it would be on its fifth sequel.
