Friday the 13th and Horror Artist Joel Robinson

Posted 15 Mar 2024 in Merchandise, The Saga

Site visitor “the buster” attended the Monster Mania convention this past weekend and met artist Joel Robinson. Joel is a horror and comic book artist that works as a staff artist for Horror Hound magazine and designs posters for horror conventions, such as Scarefest, which was featured here last year by Tony Carroll. Joel has some great Jason Voorhees portraitures from a number of movies from the Friday the 13th series.

He can be found at a number of conventions throughout the year and he mentioned this past weekend at Monster Mania that he will be at Camp Blood: Friday the 30th reunion in August. Check out some of his Jason portraitures below and to see more of Jason Voorhees and other horror characters, check out his website at www.artpusher.net.

this guy freaking rules! i’ll be ordering one of these soon.

These really look Photoshopped to me. I think he just took screen shots and messed with the colors and threw splatter on them.

Like to see some original drawings!

Obviously you haven’t seen his work close up, Hodderfan. I own several of his prints and love them. Joel’s work is awesome.

Awesome artwork! I’ve always loved the Friday 13th movies (apart from the dreadful remake) so I’m so glad I’ve found this site!!!

  12. Tony Carroll (21 Mar 2024, 23:05)

Joel is one kick ass person! Very cool guy. We actually have an interview with him for B Street that should be up soon.

Oh, and he has an awesome set of Friday the 13th collectors cards featuring Jason from each film. Each card has some stats as well as the person who portrayed Jason in that given film. I actually helped a tad on some of the info.

I actually have seen his stuff up close, on several you can see bitmapping from the low quality image he used to photoshop from. LOL, to each their own, but I 100% GUARANTEE he isn’t drawing ANYTHING. He’s applying watercolor filters and then throwing some splatter around. The end result looks cool but lets call a spade a spade, digital art like this is pretty easy to create. If you doubt it ask him to draw you a picture with a pencil sometime!

  15. Joel Robinson (22 Mar 2024, 16:39)

Hi this is Joel Robinson. I just want to thank everyone for their support and keeping the legend of Jason Voorhees so strong. I’ve been a fan of horror as far back as can remember and being able to travel and share my love for the genre is an incredible honor.

I have been drawing ever since I could pick up a pencil. I’ve been painting on canvas and paper way before I was ever introduced to a computer. I graduated from The Columbus College of Art & Design with a Bachelors of Fine Arts. While there I majored in Illustration and minored in Advertising Design. I’ve been a freelance artist for 15 years using quite a few different mediums to achieve my client’s desires. The last 10 years I have primarily been creating my work digitally using an Aiptek graphic tablet inside Photoshop. Working digitally is not a dirty word to me. I am very proud of the horror work I’ve done over the last few years. In all my years of work, nothing has excited me more than being able to use my talent to share my passion for horror with like minded individuals across this great country.

Hodderfan questioning my talent or ability I guess is the double edged sword of a public forum. I stand behind my work as an artist and I feel that Hodderfan is quite simply wrong about his/her presumptions of my skill, technique or difficulty. I will argue this point no more. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I will leave it at that.

Again Thanks to everyone who digs and supports horror art. I look forward to another exciting year celebrating all that is scary!! See ya out on the road (hell, I might even draw ya a picture)!!

Thanks for stopping by Joel! From what I can see, you have great talent and I love what you have done so far. Look forward to meeting you at Camp Blood in August. Again, thanks for stopping by and good luck with everything this year!

PS. The open forum indeed is a double edge sword. I deal with it here everyday. Thank you for handling it with class. It is appreciated.

    Hey everybody,
I’m a fellow digital artist and I’ve had a few people have the same reaction to my work, as soon as they hear it is done digitally they lose all interest and act like you’re somehow cheating. As if you are typing a few commands into a computer and it churns out artwork at the push of a button. It may not be your cup of tea but in my opinion it is art, it’s just a new medium.

I’ve worked conventions alongside Joel for a few years now. In a way we are in direct competition for your dollar at shows and I have to say that If you doubt Joel’s talent I recommend checking out his design work, the layouts of his newer work including the new Horror Hound poster in particular shows a serious eye for composition.

There will always be purists who feel it isn’t art unless it’s oil on canvas, and they are entitled to their opinion… but digital art is here to stay and in my opinion there is plenty of room for both.

Well put Robert! From what I have seen of Joel’s work, I am very impressed and look forward to what he holds in store for the future. I am hoping to get the chance to meet him at HorrorHound Weekend in a few days.
