Friday Conversation: The Worst Ending In The Franchise
With so many movies to choose from, this might seem like a daunting task. However, I know that everyone that visits this site already has their opinion on what one or two worst endings there are in the franchise. Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason X comes to my mind as being the worst endings in the franchise. I still like both movies and enjoy them greatly, but those endings make me turn away from the tv and shake my head.
This is based on your own personal opinion. And that usually has to do with where you first saw these movies and what you were expecting from the movie going in. With that being said, which is your least favorite ending in the franchise?
I usually don’t like least favorite topics. But, for sake of argument, I will post here. Bare in mind, however, that I love them all and least favorite means, in my ranking, they are on the bottom; but still loved within the Franchise as a whole.

While I love the story of Part 2 and the overall feel of Part 3, their endings were anticlimactic, short, and really never felt resolved to me. Especially Part 2.
He gets a machete in the shoulder? That’s it? That’s the big ending? A modification of the arrow through the eye gag from Part 1 is the big ending to the entire film?
It’s creepy with Pamela’s head and all, but it just always felt like (ok, we need an ending, I know, let’s just hit him with whatever we have laying around. Oh, a machete you say, that’s good enough, roll camera.)
I know the actor had to get his finger stitched back on, if I understand the war story right, and I admire the dedication; but the ending just always felt like they tacked it on at the last minute to me.
Part 3 fares little better. I like the shot of him raising his arms up after the iconic axe blow, but then he just walks about three steps and falls over on his ass. We have an off dream sequence, then he’s seen just laying in the barn. I don’t know, creep yes; but not climactic. Really, kinda just… there it is. Felt like the budget ran out or something and, well, we’ll just let him lay there like that.
I was never really a big fan of the Halloween let’s just leave him ‘out there.’ The idea that if we just leave him ‘out there’ that it leaves it same scary way. It really just annoyed me. We’re smart enough to know Jason always comes back, we don’t need it staged for next time. And it never really played are scary to me; it just always came off to me as lazy.
If we look at my favorite, Part 6, we have a lot of action with him busting up through the water (a throw back to Part 1), we have him being lit on fire, a chain tied around his neck, then a motor boat propeller shoved into his neck. We also have the emotion of the character, as she dives in to save Tommy and all the children gather around. It used action, romance, and the innocence of children in one collective ending. A lot better thought out in terms of storyline, gags, and audience heart strings. I always remember cringing at the motor boat as Jason’s whole body convolutions, and feeling like one of the children as I watched the hero and hope he comes to life again.
Hitting him with an axe, or a machete, and saying ‘done, print to tape, it’s a rap’ just feels… not as good a job as they could have done if they tried harder. That’s how I feel anyway.
Part 7’s ending was pretty shitty. The dad coming back was ridiculous. I’d take part 8’s ending over that one any day. Maybe it’s because I understand the ending of part 8 better than a lot of people. Haha.
SirMWK Please explain your vision of part 8’s ending.
The worst ending in my opinion was Jason X. we just get uber Jason after 80 minutes of bull shit and then some asshole comes and takes him to earth 2. I wanted to see him Kill some more. Or at least a better ending instead of just seeing a mask and some teens go check out what crashed into the lake.
For me this one’s a no-brainer. The ending of the Friday The 13th remake (2009) was the least satisfying of any in the series. The quickie “burst through the dock and drag down the girl” was supremely uninspired.
As far as the Paramount 80’s run goes, I’d say Part VI–although a great entry up to that point–had kind of a run-of-the-mill final shot. Jason’s back in Crystal Lake, and lo, there’s his eye open and watching. Cue the (actually, very cool) Alice Cooper song. But the final image was a bit of a let-down. Good to know Tom McLoughlin had a much better ending in mind, though Paramount wouldn’t let him use it.
Part 7 and 8 have the worst ending in my opinion, I dont count Jason X as a part of the franchise
After watching the Anime “berserk”, I think I like all the endings of the F13 movies because the ending to Berserk was the worst I have ever seen.
I think part 2 was good but the end where is Paul what appened after Jason brock the Glass ?.
Part 8 was the worst
the Remake too
I don’t count Jason goes to hell and Jason X because they Sucks!!!
Jason Takes Manhattan is my least favorite ending, unless you assume that it was an hallucination (sp?) like the rest of the younger Jason stuff. If you look at it that way, then 7 has to be my least favorite ending. You would have to assume they’d have pulled Tina’s dad’s body out of the lake. It wasn’t like he was out that far. Just off that dock. But if we’re listing in favorite order:
1. Final Chapter
2. 3-D
3. Original
4. Jason Lives
5. New Beginning
6. Part 2
7. Remake
8. Freddy vs. Jason
9. Jason X
10. Jason Goes To Hell
11. Jason Takes Manhattan
12. New Blood
Least favorite – Part 8. It just confuses me.
In no particular order, my choices for worst ending:
Part 8
Jason Goes To Hell
Jason X
Remake
I actually enjoyed all the movies ending, but if i had to pick a least fav, it would have to be part 5, because we get tommy with the mask and a knife like he is going to kill, then cut to part 6 and he has jason’s original mask, and we never know if it was a dream or what at the end of part 5, i remember i was excited when i first saw part 5 because i thought tommy would be the new killer, but i suppose bringing jason back was the best way to go.
I think the part 8 and part 9 the champions: both has the worst ending ever!
Part 5 is a great movie but the ending is very upset. The only problem in that film is the fake Jason.
Jason Goes to Hell does not have the terrible ending only but entire movie is a nightmare!!!
Part 7 ending I think a little bit pathetic also.
Well, so:
1º – Jason X
2º – JGTH
3º – Part 8
4º – Part 7
5º – Part 5
[]s
I fail to see what´s wrong with the Jason X ending. Uber-Jason gcrashing to Earth 2, with his mask slwoly drifting to the ground of the lake was a nice one IMO.
The worst ending has to go to JTM: Jason forms into a child … okay, you could theorize that this was another one of Rennie´s hallucination … but the whole “we float the cnals with acid every midnight” stuff was CRAZY! Then the absurd “oh, dog, who we lost at the other side of ‘New York, found us again” and the “let´s visit the statue of liberty first and report the mass-murder later” dialouge really went to far.
The remake-ending was a bit disapointing as well. The fight in the barn was great, but the scare at the lake atend was too predictable. Why the hell would trey nd Whinteyy drag JAson´s body there anyways?
I am shocked to see Part 2´s ending mentioned here. The finale in the shak was the best of the franchise, hands down!
Germaniac,
For me, the Jason X ending was good until the ship exploded and then Jason is flying directly towards the rescue ship and from nowhere Brodski swoops in from the side of the frame to wisk him away. Wouldn’t Brodski have died in the ship explosion? That just didn’t make sense. I admit, though, the mask falling into the lake at the end was a cool shot!
worst: reboot
best: part 1 of course!
this conversation brings up a great point though. The endings to these flicks are generally pretty blase.
I have to disagree with the Part 2 detractors though. Warrington’s big scene was the shizzle, and was set up perfectly by the dog, Muffin
Hmmmm, this is quite a tough one for me as there are a few that really suck, but if i have to go with the ultimate suckage then i would have to say part 5. I do like the movie but finishing with what clearly shows tommy getting ready to kill pam in the hospital to part 6 with him and his friend going to dig jason up without further explanation into the events that took place before this left everything quite empty. I agree with the studio that jason returning would have been the better option in the long run but the idea of tommy, the one who originally killed jason spiralling down to the point of madness and following in his footsteps as he too lost his mother would have also worked i think. Just my opinion but i think 5’s ending is the royalty of suckage.
Part 8 would have to be my number 1 for worst endings. I agree that JGTH’s ending was actually decent but as for the rest of the film…well that’s a different story. The remake’s ending could have been better, too much of a rip off of the original. I don’t consider that a tribute to it.
Hey f13ticket, did you watch all of part 2 or did you stop when Jason got the machette to the shoulder? By your post it looks like you missed Gillette 15 minutes of fame (poser Jason) and the cliff hanger that has never been answered, what happen to Paul. Now that is issue I would like answered before I die. I know I saw one of your other posts saying your first Friday movie was FvsJ, so that is why I ask.
Anyway, worst has to be a 4 way tie. Part 7-10, or as I call it the Hodder era. Don’t get me wrong, thought his Jason he made his own and it was ok, not great, but his ending were the worst!!! My favorite is part 2, because their is a question out there that I want answered and when I saw that movie as young boy (my sister got me in the movie only great thing she ever did), I walked away want to see more of the series and what happened. Part 3 doesn’t talk about it. Except for the Hodder era, I thought all the rest were good, no issues, but none of them make we wonder or want to see more as much as part 2 does. Just my thoughts. Maybe they could answer this in the next Friday movie
Fury,
Brodski had a jetpack on his suit. You can see the burst when he tackles Uber-Jason. He obviously used it to escape from the Grendel.
I also have to agree that TNB´s ending was lame. It´s my second least-favourite ending. Ghost dad? Come on! Even te cut ending with the fisherman sucked!
I have to disagree with the statement that the endings tzo thse flicks are “generally pretty blase”.
Part 1´s ening is what made the franchise so sucessfull in the first place. The finale in the shack of part 2 was awesome (okaay, the final scenes with the final scare in he cabin and the missing Paul where a bit confusing, but it doesn´t take any glory from the shack-finale). Part 3´s climax in the barn was inense as well … but the jump-scare with mrs voorhees was useless. The “other” ending with the decapitation would have been a winner.
The climax in TFC with Tommy tricking Jason remided me a lot of Part 2´s climax … therefore its great. The actual ening scene´s in the hospital where meh.
Part 5 and 6´s ending where okay for me.
JGTH´s ending with the Freddy-glove .. now that ending created all the buzz, o therefore it has to be good.
The final shots of FvsJ, with Jason walking out of the lake and Freddy´s wink was awesome IMO.
Oh I definitely remember the jet pack deal, Germaniac. For some reason the whole, Jason being flung perfectly through space exactly towards the rescue ship and Brodski being able to escape the ship as it explodes and perfectly meeting Jason at the exact point Jason was going to get to the rescue ship, just made me turn my head and think, hmm? This hang up and I am able to look past a lot of other things in the franachise. Go figure!
I thought the better ending would have the Grendel explode and the explosion hurdles Jason towards Earth 2 and then show the atmosphere burning up the remaining living parts of Jason’s body. Then the metallic reamains would float to the bottom of the lake.
Jason goes too hell and Jason X are the worst ending not just because they suck but because they were done like it was a fill in in a rush to get the ending done.
My list of worst endings for Friday;
1. Jason X – liked the first hour of this movie a lot – but that ending…what the frak were they thinking.
2. Part 8 – so bad – would it not have been cool if Part 9 just started in the sewers and Jason’s hand comes up he puts the decayed Mask back on; and then the murders just start up
3. Part 9 – do not give me Freddy in a Friday the 13th movie.
4. Part 7 – like this movie a lot but hated the dad coming up from lake to get Jason.
All other chapter endings were fine with me.
…”he’s definitely dead,” “really, show me…”
i guess we all have different definitions of what an ending is, so I will clarify my comments, Germaniac
1: Jason pops up– the best ending imo, and universally recognized as one of the signature moments in horror
2: Jason comes through window– awesome, because it was set up so well with Muffin, it still gets a jump even though it’s a rehash
3: Jason comes out of barn with bloody head, Mrs. V pops up– good, until Mrs. V pops up. That was a head scratcher
4: Die! Die!, Tommy in hospital with weird look to him– pretty standard movie ending, but fitting
5: Dream sequence followed by Tommy in mask– other than logistically making no sense (why would they leave a mask and knife in his room???), I don’t see why everyone hates this ending. It’s fine
6: I actually forget the ending. Not my favorite of the films
7: Dad pops up– dumb.
8: Jason pukes, says Mommy don’t let me die, turns into kid– I like the part where he pukes
9: Haven’t seem it in 16 years
I leave it at that. Basically the last couple minutes is what constitutes an ending in my book. Not the entire shack scene in Part 2, etc. That would be the climax I guess?
Jason Takes Manhattan has the worst ending hands down. How did toxic waste turn Jason back into a kid?
with fresh skivvies to boot
Mmmm so many bad endings to choose from. I think its a tie between Part 7 and 8 and Jason X.
But if I have to choose Part 7 i think is the worse it just doesnt make sense. Its impossible the dad was still at the bottom of the lake and even if he was he would of been nothing but a skeleton after all those years. really really bad ending
part 8 and jason X speak for themselves…
For the reboot haters… that ending was great, Jason getting pulled towards the wood chipper and fighting for his life… PRICELESS!
Best ending probably part 6. Jason being returned to his watery grave
thats just my thoughts
Thats an easy one. Part 8 had the worst ending of all the Friday films. Although I enjoyed the movie, Jason the kid went from mongloid to regular kid. I could forgive the cruise ship and the vancouver thing, but cmon thats the best ending Rob Hedden could come up with? And whats with the toxic waste overflowing the sewers at midnight? Does that even happen in real life? All I know is that theres a million better ways to die in New York. Jason turning back into a child is just plain stupid and I hate it. I hate Jason Goes To Hell more but at least the ending was good. As for the ending to Jason X..I believe they were trying to open the door for Jason X 2 or something..Jason landing on Earth 2. And part 7’s ending couldve been better. But Paramount raped that movie to death. If You dont know what I mean watch His Name Was Jason, or the bonus disc from crystal lake to manhattan. And as for the remake I liked the ending…it kinda tipped the hat to part 1.
Part 7 adn 8 sucked. I can live with the jason x ending over those two.
Part 8 had a stupid ending. I don’t really like Jason Goes To hell, but you gotta admit, the ending was pretty sick. If the rest of the movie was as good as the ending was, the movie would kick ass. My favorite parts was 1,2,3,4,6,7. The remake had a stupid ending to, so did part 7 and Jason X.
One word for the end of part 8. Retarted. Super muppet, pistachio pudding-faced Jason is drowned in a sewer by a half wit only to transform into a little boy……. I could write a better ending on the toilet during an emergency shit session.
Much as I hate to be a repeat, part 8’s ending really is awful. 3-D’s ending comes out of nowhere, but at least it’s scary (and there ARE legitimate explanations for it, even if they were probably not what the authors had in mind*). Part 8’s, however, looks silly in practice on top of being ridiculous in concept. The toxic ex machina flows from nowhere, melting Jason like wax, and turning him into a little boy for some reason. Then Rennie and Sean, whose friends and families have just been slaughtered before their eyes, decide that hey, since they’re here, they might as well finish their field trip. Again, I don’t mean to give the impression I hate the film (I like it well enough), but I’d really have liked a better ending.
Also, the remake’s ending wasn’t bad, I do think it was anti-climactic and that Jason went down FAR too easily.
*My favorite theory is that Jason, after knocking Chris unconscious, mistook her for dead and dumped her “body” in his shrine, where she would have seen Mrs. Voorhees’s remains. When Chris has that nightmare of a badly-decomposed Pamela lunging at her, it’s because she’s finally remembering this.
^I meant to type, “WHILE the remake’s ending wasn’t bad…” up there. Sorry for the goof!
The Ending of the part 7 was simply ridiculous….And the better ending i think is the part 1 ( =
part 8 was the worst ending, thats jokes what robohooker said
Part 8 is by far the worst ending. Why would he turn into a child after getting hit with toxic waste? He’s a gargantuan monster on the outside and yet a little insecure boy inside? I guess that’s what they were going for but either way it was terrible.
I think the overwhelming consensus is that the ending of part 8 sucks. Its so terrible it really has no redeeming qualities. Jason looked bad. The toxic waste thing was absurd, the Jason as a normal boy with his swimming trunks on was beyond stupid and an insult to the franchise (although I always figured it was just Rennie’s final hallucination, with the real Jason having escaped).
I think the best ending belongs to the original, I just wish I had seen these films in order so that I could have been more surprised the first time I saw him come out of the lake.
i agree with petch lucas. why the hell would they carry his big ass down to the lake anyway? it just doesn’t make sense. its a bummer, especially after the movie being so bad ass! i like the endings to the first four alot. 2, 3 , and 4 ARE the jason story line….and its epic!!
How can anybody say the ending to the 2024 reboot had a bad ending? Jason came back to give the fans one last scream, which is how 90% of all horror movies end. Jason X had a horrible ending (actually….it was a horrible movie). Wasnt there a movie where Jason gets on a boat and visits times square? I believe that ending was craptastic.
The remake was a good movie. The only thing that bothered the piss out of me was that the nice girl died. She didn’t have sex, she didn’t smoke pot, and she didn’t drink beer. The rules of the game state that she shouldn’t have died, but she did. I guess it was kind of a surprise and was a good shock to see her die, but still wth. Anyway, the ending to the reboot was damn good. Why would the leave the body there in the farm house? They dragged him to the lake to bury the body like anyone would do if they just committed murder. They just didn’t know Jason was a freak of nature and was going to come back and drag them under water with him lol.
Reboot was the best Jason movie of the past two decades by far. I don’t see why people give it such a bad wrap. In fact I think I’m going to watch it right now.
A lot of them have weak endings, but part 8 was the only one that made me walk out of the theater annoyed.
Part 1 was the best. Part 2 would have been better if they just faded out on Jason leaping through the window and chopped that “Where’s Paul?” bit.
The reboot was slicker and more professional all around, but the ending was uninspired, as someone said above. Why did they bother dragging Jason to the water? Wouldn’t they want the police to see who killed all those people? The rest was predictable, with Json leaping up. No one in the theater jumped or screamed at the showing I attended.
when i was a kid seeing them in theaters, i think i hated jx’s ending the most & i didn’t think part 8’s was that bad. now i kinda think JGTH has the worst ending. demons pulling him to hell…what the fuck? despite the rising from the grave stuff, f13th’s never touched topics like hell & magic, and it was better that way.
i’d have to say if they had used the intended ending of part 8, with jason barfing up child jason, that would be hands down the worst. as it is, it sucks, but it doesn’t suck any worse than the 90 minutes leading up to it.
Parts 5 and 8
