Friday Conversation: Prophets of Doom
Slasher movies became all the rage in the early 80’s as every studio raced to create the next big slasher movie to fill the pocket books. One of the key characters in all early slasher movies is the Prophet of Doom. Not many, if any, can rival Crazy Ralph. His character was the catalyst of the creepy feeling that was given to the film. Without his words of warning, the POV shots may not have been as menacing. After Crazy Ralph’s demise in Part 2, the filmmakers felt they still needed some sort of doomsayer to warn the kids that were heading to Higgins Haven. What better way than to have said kids run into (almost literally) Abel lying...
Friday Conversation: The Ending Of The New Blood
It is well documented that John Carl Buechler holds a sour taste in his mouth when it comes to talk of how his movie was altered at many different levels. From his battles with not only the MPAA but with Associate Producers and the Paramount brass, it is a miracle that he left his name on this movie as Director. Probably the most infamous of the changes made during the shooting of The New Blood was the ending. Whereas Mr. Buechler had designed a very grotesque and rotting depiction of Tina’s father that would burst out of his watey grave to save his daughter, Producers would intervene and force the Director’s hand to change the father’s look. The result is...
Friday Conversation: What Composer Fits New Friday the 13th?
Many fans that visit this website have voiced their displeasure over the reboot’s score. I for one do not fault Steve Jablonksy for his score as he was probably informed to create that style of music. That being said, our visitors have requested, no demanded a return to the traditional Friday the 13th music. Harry Manfredini created a masterful score for the original 4 movies that resonate wih fans even today. Sadly, even Harry has moved away from that type of sound and uses more of a synth type of production. So, if you had your choice of any composer in Hollywood, which would you elect to score the next Friday the 13th movie? One composer I would like...
Friday Conversation: Which Jason Would You Display?
In honor of our newest interview, we thought we would ask our visitors, what Jason from which movie would you like to display in your residence? Would you display a bust or a latex mask? Would you display Jason with a hockey mask or would you show Jason with out the hock on? Some films in the series show Jason with varying damage he acquired throughout a particular film. Would you display different versions of the same Jason from one movie, or would you only want one Jason per movie represented?
Friday Conversation: Tense Music In The Franchise
This will generally apply to the earlier films as the zombie era and beyond offered little in tense moments and scares. However, there are a few good, tense moments later in the series that can still elicit a good scary moment even upon repeat viewing. The question is always asked, is a scene suspenseful on its own or does orchestration play a big role in creating the perfect horror moment. Halloween is a great example of a horror movie becoming a classic with the perfect marrriage of smart direction and complimentary music. Believe it or not, Friday the 13th became a huge success not soley on the merits of directing and gore alone, but the music had a huge...
Friday Conversation: Horror Conventions
Since the bulk of the horror and sci-fi conventions are starting now, some visitors to the website may wonder what all of the hoopla is about. I myself have been to just a few small conventions that were local to my area. I got the idea of what to expect from conventions while having the opportunity to talk to a lot of great people involved in the movie and entertainment industry. Getting to talk with Kane Hodder for a while was a huge treat. That guy can really put a choke hold on you! I have been able to talk to a number of other actors, but none was more gracious and willing to give me his time than Walter Phelan. Walter explained...
Friday Conversation: VHS Covers Of The 80′s
One of my favorite things to do when I was a kid was visit the local video store and spend hours looking at the VHS box covers and reading all of the descriptions. During that time there was no other way to find out about movies and it was a hobby that kept me out of trouble that some of my friends seemed to always get into. Spending time at the video store was a BIG reason I was drawn to the Friday the 13th series. Now, I found a lot of other movies that appealed to me as well, but the Friday the 13th movies were the best. I’ll tell you, the sight of that bloody hockey mask with the...
Friday Conversation: Did Michael DeLuca Ruin “Jason X” At The Box Office?
When Sean Cunningham went to Mike Deluca with the concept for Jason X, Mr. Deluca was all for the concept and said go for it. Todd Farmer’s script was ripe with original ideas that would add the wow factor to a franchise that was dormant for 6 years. Although the budget restricted what Todd’s script called for the movie to become, the movie itself was still creative and entertaining. The film was completed for release for 2024. Unfortunately, Michael Deluca left New Line Cinema at that time as did all of the support for Jason X. The film preceeded to sit on the shelf for two years while execs figured out what to do with it. During that time...
“Crystal Japan”: The Evolution of Jason From Shack To Barn
There are a few inconsistencies in the series and last week we discussed the ending of Part 2 and if it was a dream or not a dream. Fans are divided on that topic and have their own perspective on those events. Adding to that topic are the events that follow into the next movie, Part 3. Why does Jason travel great distances to change clothes and why did the filmmakers decide to go with an overall different look for Jason? In the beginning of Part 3, Jason has now removed the machete from his shoulder and slides away from his shack in the woods. He leaves his shack, I am assuming because Jason knows the police will not...
Friday Conversation: Debating The Ending of Part 2
The most confusing ending in the Friday the 13th series came very early in the franchise. The ending of Part 2 has been debated and speculated about for close to 30 years. Did Paul die? Was the ending a dream? For the longest time, everyone was under the assumption that John Furey walked off set leaving the filmmakers with an incomplete ending, unable to explain what happened to Paul. After the Crystal Lake Memories and Making Friday the 13th books were released, some information was shed on the situation. According to Ron Kurz, writer of Friday the 13th Part 2, the scene where Jason jumps through the window is supposed to be real. He mentions that Paul was killed and as Ginny calls...
