Friday Conversation: Finding The Reboot Hockey Mask

This topic was debated a lot last year. However, with dust settling, so to speak, and now having some extra time passing since the film’s release, it was though that this discussion could be revisted again. Many fans were not happy with the how Jason found the hockey mask in Friday the 13th (2009). It sounds nitpicky to some, however fans are always up to discussing their likes and dislikes of their favorite Crystal Lake slasher.

The theatrical version had Jason discovering the mask quite randomly, lying on the floor after the dispatching of Donnie in the barn. However, the cut scene not only has Jason finding the hockey mask in a different way, but explaining why Jason was at the barn in the first place. No, he did not kill Ronnie because of the weed. For those few fans that have not watched the deleted scene, check out the video below.

What is your more preferred version of Jason retaining his trademark mask?

  1. I like the theatrical one more. I like we saw the sack get torn up thus explaining why he needed a new mask and for a brief glimpse we saw him unmasked. It came of more intense IMO and I always get a laugh at Donnie’s reaction to the unmasked Jason “That sh*t ain’t f*cking right dude.”.

  2. I actually like a little of both versions. As Lester mentions seeing the sack torn gives a reason for needing the hockey mask and seeing Jason’s face. And in the cut scene seeing him take it off of a dead Donnie is a little nod back to Part 3.

  3. I like the theatrical version better and its actually because I dislike the beheading. It’s a bit too over-the-top for that scene although the reason he was there could have been shown in the theatrical version as well if he picked the cannisters up on his way downstairs or something. Either way, i liked seeing his face, I liked knowing the sack was messed up which gave him reason, and hey who can complain with a mask like that anyway?

  4. I liked both versions, but with the theatrical one we get to see his face and thats what a lot of fans want to see anyway!

  5. sorry, but i don’t like either. to give jason the mask is something special. like honestly, who would have thought in part 3 that he would come out on the dock to kill Vera with the hockey mask on? that made for a special moment and a creepy one at that.

i thought that the way he got it in the reboot was kinda lame, he should have gone without the hood and mask for awhile and then found it in some clutter later in the movie, when he is ransacking the cottage looking for the kids to kill and then put it on. like in the tool shed, when the chinese guy finds the hockey stick, that is where the mask should have been, and when Jason kills him, thats when he finds it laying among some hockey gear.

i don’t know really, just find it a huge let down compared to the original way it got it in part 3 and then the way he comes out on the dock and Vera doesn’t even realize what is about to happen and actually talks to him as if he was Shelly.

the writers should have really put alot of thought into the way Jason gets one of the most recognizable images in cinema history. this was supposed to be something special, not just a found it in the loft of a barn when i killed some pervert. just bad writing on their part for taking the easy way out.

funny that they never had it in the middle of the woods somewhere laying on a patch of fluffy grass and moss with a beam of sunshine shinning down thru the trees on it, and Jason just happens to stumble upon it.

  6. There both WEAK.! I wanted some part six shit , lots of rain thunder n lighting then he puts on the mask and BAM! HE TURNS AROUND LIGHTING STRIKES AND YOU SEE A FULL ON JASON !!

  7. I agree with TD. I like a little of both.

  8. I prefer the alternate version…it’s not perfect but a least we heard some much need ki ki ki…ma ma ma!!!!

I do agree with the whole “tearing the sack off” in the theatrical version but come on, did I really want to hear an asshole talk to a mannequin about how he lost his virginity to it and that she was still tight? Frakin’ stupid dialogue!!

Hated so much of the characters and writing in the re-boot.

  9. I liked the theatrical version. I especially like when he looks in the mirror after he puts it on. Plus you get to see his face for a moment.

  10. Donnie sucked. I felt his whole character was an insult to my intelligence as a fan of horror films. It’s like they thought “people who like these movies must not be very bright. Let’s put in a character that caters to that demographic!”. The rest of the cast was the same. Platnum Dunes thought we were all retarded.

  11. I honestly didn’t care for either version.

  12. Neither one was all that great but the theatrical one was the better of the two…I just wanted to mention that in the original trailers for Part 3, Jason is shown with new clothes and the mask, before we even see the film. How did that not ruin the suprise? What was fan reaction at that time? People must have been puzzled a little bit, no? Such big changes. Are there any vintage fans here who can comment? Sorry to be off topic but I am curious about this. BTW, I wish Jason had found the remake mask in Trents garage, along with some other old school hockey and sports gear, left there from family winter getaways.

  13. I hated this movie, so I couldn’t care less about which seen was better.

  14. There was no Internet when the surprise was ruined in Part 3. The crybabies were forced to tell their moms how much they hated seeing an icon like Jason wearing something as simple and stupid as a hockey mask.

  15. I liked the theatrical version and liked the cut scene a little of both was nice to see but feel the went with the proper cut, And happy to say i liked the reboot not as much as the paramount days but still up there with them, I mean let’s be honest i loved part 3 but is everyone forgetting how we got the mask in part 3 lol im not knocking it i love it but let’s be honest much better in reboot and platinum tried to satisfy all of our needs and i think there scene(s) where much better than someone just randomly running in with a hockey mask and then next scene we see him with it on, atleat we get to see them an put it on in this one.

    Love pt 1,2,3,4,6,11 and 12

  16. I also like both versions. In the set of original storyboards I have is still the original version of it. If you like, I can take some pics for you to see and maybe Jason is interested in posting them here in this thread?

  17. how is it a nod to part 3 when we dont even see jason get the mask for put it on. he just walks out from the barn all like hey check me out now bitches!!!!

  18. i like the cut version better(just).its less comedy and more realistic, which the whole movie was missing!and i agree with the ki ki ki ha ha ha,,,its hardly in the movie!its not a friday the 13th without it!

  19. Not a nod to part 3 i was trying to express much better than part 3 and made more sense but most people still complained just pointing out that there is a fan base that will never be pleased lol

  20. Cut scene! (However, when Jason looks at himself in the mirror, it was like he was thinking, “Yeah, I’m a bad ass now!”) and that was cool to.

  21. @Paul Juser – I realize there was not internet in 1983. I was talking about televised movie trailers, or theatrical trailers.

  22. I love the alternate version better. We should have seen his face in the alternate version though. That would have been cool to see the joy on Jason’s face looking at the hockey mask for the first time. I love the way Jason’s face looks in the remake judging by that one blurry behind-the-scenes picture and the few frames of it in the actual theatrical version of the movie. They should have shot a lot more of his face than what they did. Still kind of pisses me off!

  23. i liked it, both were good, the deleted one being the better, wish it would have stayed in the movie. donnie was funny, good times!

  24. Both were okay, but the one the theatrical version was more intense. My sister screamed during that part, that means it was good.

  25. @ James Smith

Yeah, they should have had a little more of his face, but they show it a lot in the behind the scenes on the killer cut.

  26. I think they should have come up with something similar to part 3, I think how jason came out of nowhere wearing a hockey mask and the soon to be victim thought it was shelly and then in an instant realized it was not shelly but in fact someone else and I still think that scene is eerie to this day, so if PD would have done something in that perspective I think it would have made the scene really cool.

  27. I think everyone here gives convincing arguments on which version is better.
The alternate version is my choice, however, for being the better. It was more straight to the point and gave Jason a reason for being at the barn. You also didn’t get as much of Donnie’s lame, perverted dialogue. Does anyone really talk like that?

Also, I might be wrong but I don’t think you actually saw Jason’s face in the theatrical version when the sack was torn off. I believe that was “added” on the DVD release.
At least, I don’t remember seeing his face in that scene.

  28. I liked the way they did it in the theatrical version. The decapitation scene just seemed too cheesy.

  29. Did anyone besides me catch the explanation of why Jason likes the hock enough to wear it in the reboot? :D

  30. I like the theatrical version better. Just more serious & not corny as the deleted version. It was too corny to have the guy put on the mask (look funny on him too ;) ) & kinda stare at him. Then Jason just chop his head off with the mask still on. Not to mention we see how fake the head look, so theatrical version for me.

  31. When Clay approaches Donnie earlier in the film, Donnie mentions that someone is stealing the carosene. Jason doesn’t pay electric bills most likely. I don’t think we needed to physically see Jason steal the carosene to know it was him. This is another reason I prefer the theatrical.
Movies need you to think a little bit, that’s what makes us watch them again. Those little things we may have missed the first time around. Showing Jason stealing the carosene to me was like, giving us too much information.

  32. so was the bloke saying he had sex with the mannequin!!!

  33. Both are horrible. In order to make a mask origin scene better, it would have had to take some actual thought. Not just, oh he just finds it. Those scenes are so lazy.

  34. I like the deleted scene better. It makes alot more sense. I couldnt understand why Jason was in the barn in the first place. What I like about the deleted scene is it kind of tips the hat to part 3. Jason slit Shelley’s throat and took the hockey mask in the barn, and in the remake He chops off Donnies head while Hes wearing the mask. The final cut of the scene didnt really do it for Me. It seemed a little convienient that Jason found the mask right after His sack mask gets ripped. Either way, its a great movie.

  35. The deleted scene doesn’t look satisfying for me. Either what was in the movie.
I wish Jason would take the mask from a prankster, as it’s the Friday tradition (Shelly and then in part 8).

  36. I didn’t really care much for the remake… Aside from Jason X and part 8, it’s the worst Friday movie. imo
